Being the oldest of three and watching my younger brothers get away with all sorts of shit and my parents held us accountable to different rules.

I remember wanting them to make a chore chart just so I could start getting things in writing.

I got the exact opposite of that deal. My older brother was allowed tons of freedom that I wasn't, even when you adjust for our age difference. They wanted to correct the "mistakes" they'd made with him and then later wondered why I was so socially maladjusted and paranoid.

I've since worked through most of my issues, but I don't think I'll be letting them have much access to any children I might have in the future.

This, exactly! My older brother could do WHATEVER he wanted (possicly because my mom felt guilty for our parents going through a divorce). Start work at 13? Sure. Have everything paid for by mom because 'he's so loyal to me'? Ok! Never pay a dime in rent (he's 36 and still lives at home) WHY NOT.

Meanwhile I had to push and shove her to finally give me enough practice to get my driving license (20) and she was nagging me to pay her rent for the last 2 years (my response: you'll get my money when I see his check!)

I'm glad you've worked through most of your issues, anon. Hopefully I'll be there one day, too.
