It's not so much that they believed that black people wouldn't go to heaven, but that they would go to heaven as a servant and have to be reborn...or something.

Petersen said, "If that negro is faithful all his days, he can and will enter the Celestial Kingdom. He will go there as a servant, but he will get celestial glory."

They believed that the black skin was a mark of sin from god and that's why blacks were slaves and servants and weren't allowed the priesthood until 1978.

I find this really interesting because my grandmother is southern Baptist and she used to spew a bunch of shit about how God didn't like black people, so that's why he made them black with a "mark of sin" or something. I always wondered where she got that, because I don't -think- it's in the Bible anywhere. Just goes to show that people are prone to use religion to back up whatever fucked up, ridiculous beliefs they have.

Dark skin was interpreted to be the "mark of Cain." So anyone not lily-white was clearly descended from Cain, kin-murderer. Racism (or really any type of bigotry)+the Bible=Holy shit.
