http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coolie

"Historically, a coolie (variously spelled cooli, cooly, kuli, quli, koelie etc.) was an Asian slave or manual laborer, particularly in southern China, the Indian subcontinent, and the Philippines during the 19th century and early 20th century. It is also a contemporary racial slur for people of Asian descent, including people from South Asia, Central Asia, etc., particularly in South Africa."

Thank you anon.

I'm surprised I've never heard this word before. I guess it's just not used where I live but more prominent elsewhere.

I'm American and was born in 1972, and remember it from my childhood; but I haven't heard it in like 30 years ...

Ah, that must be why. I'm only 22. It's fallen out of use. Thank you.

With that thought, I wonder how long a word has to be in disuse before it's considered archaic.
