Go try to talk about some vulnerability being a chink in someone's armor. Go ahead, I'll just wait right here.

OP.

I don't quite get what you mean? Is this a reference to something?

Sure is. "Chink" is also a not-too-extinct (if at all) slur against Chinese people. I've actually seen two people online go ape over the use of the word chink, or advocate it should be removed from the language AND NEVER USED AGAIN - and it was around for non-discriminatory practical use long before it was ever swiped as a racial slur. Further, it still means what it meant 400 years ago.

oh wow. I had no idea. I was puzzling over the sentence trying to work out what could be offensive or if it was a reference and ugh, people. Not all words are still slurs, or are only slurs, especially out of context in their alternative definition.

Makes my head hurt.

Speaking as someone who has experience racist remarks referring to Chinese people just a few years ago, yeeeah, people still use it. I knew a scumbag back in the HP fandom who hated Cho Chang and called her a "slut" and said "I hate that fucking chink". He went on an entire rant about it, and when people tried to respond to him (without using any of the SJW tactics you see today mind you), he said he didn't care and kept using the fucking word.

He was an active member, a rabid shipper, and part of the LDS. This guy was not a troll.

So not all of us are jumpy SJW pawing at the chance to curse someone out. I'm Chinese myself, and I do side eye someone using that word because of my experience of someone using it as a hurtful slur. But I try to look at the context in how it's used. So do others. We're not stupid. We can tell when that word is used to reference a sound and when it's used as a racial slur.

I'm sorry you still have to put up with angry name-calling jackasses that way. I don't see or hear it nearly as often as I did when I was a kid, but it's possible that's because I try not to surround myself with people who'd use it. And, not being Chinese, it would never be directed at me, so that's another possible reason.

And, an original use of a word isn't always a reason to keep using it after its meaning has been corrupted enough; one case in point, I believe, is the word hussy. Long ago it was used to describe a particular type of woman, but not offensively, and in another language anyway - well, that's changed. There's no modern way you can use that word now as positive or even neutral.

But there are words that do still work in context and people today are still aware of the original use, like chink (although, I think it was used very recently in some national sports headline about a Chinese athlete - it was actually used in its correct form, as vulnerability, but it was a rare unfortunate juxtaposition and some editor REALLY should have known better and not used it). And there are others - I once got somebody on FS really pissed off at me for saying the word "retard" shouldn't be dropped from use, since it has neutral meaning ... like, flame-retardant. It means to inhibit or stunt actions. I use another word when I don't know my audience so people don't take it wrong, but I think it's still a valid term with life left to it.

I have a feeling the two people who I saw take offense to correct use of chink were non-Chinese trying to be overly zealous (actually, I can tell you one of them was for sure). I'd prefer to believe that than stupidity anyway ...
