But don't you need a code to get into AO3 or did they change it recently to open membership? If the latter, I can see how a mass migration could overload the servers. But if the former, couldn't they have paced the approvals better? Or are these people that had gotten approval prior but didn't bother moving until the crackdown?

Does it matter if you're registered or not? You still create bandwidth when you're browsing the site.

You do, but so many people got codes all at once that they flooded the site. When someone gets an approval for membership, they get several spare codes, and a lot of people gave out their spares when the ffn.net purge was going down. Also, many, many people applied for membership, all at once, to the point where approvals are now backed up for several months.

And yeah, I think there were probably a lot of people who'd gotten approval but didn't bother moving until that point.
