I think is because if every time you check out something you end up getting annoyed by some fans, you start associating that something with feelings of annoyance. If it goes on long enough, anytime you think about the something, you get annoyed - hence it is ruined.

As far as 'willing subject yourself to it' - I kinda agree. I stopped following the Loki tags on tumblr because most of the post annoyed me. But I do understand the need to see if maybe, just maybe, things have gotten better, especially if there isn't really anyplace to fangirl/fanboy about it, otherwise.

I've never really seen it that way though. I involved myself in some terrible fandoms for some time and sure, sometimes they act really annoying... but that's just the fans being fans. If I started associating my annoyance with them with whatever the fandom is, I wouldn't like anything at all (probably).
