Because people ship people.

I mean, they ship canon straight characters in slash fics, or make gay characters fall for the opposite gender. They ship people who never showed any chemistry on screen - hell they ship people who never met on screen.

I can totally see how people see Sherlock as asexual in canon (as you say, a lot of hints were dropped - but even then, I wouldn't expect there to be any less shipping or smut fic.

Absolutely this. And people get pretty into their ships, so it may even seem like they believe he is sexual in canon, whether or not they actually do believe that.

In canon I view him as asexual too, but in fandom? I ship the hell out of him and John. You don't have to view him as sexual and that's perfectly fine, but other people are going to do what interests them as well. And there is asexual!Sherlock fic out there, it just might not be as abundant as you'd like. I feel you; we all like something we wish fandom had more of, but that can't be helped.

I seem to be the only one who doesn't interpret the secret as "wah I'm butthurt that people ship what I don't like" - more that they wished more asexual fic existed.

I don't know - it could go either way. I can understand frustration at lack of your fic of preference, but they honestly sound surprised that people write him as sexual...

Yeah and then Moffat sort of made statements about how he wasn't asexual...even though it as fair to assume he as from just viewing the show.

Personally I didn't even see him as asexual per se - just as someone who thought romantic involvement/sex would hinder him in pursuing the stuff he really found interesting.

yeah I'm not that up on all the Pronouncements - the only one I vaguely remember seeing is that someone Official said Sherlock (or Sherlock and John ;p) weren't gay.

I agree with your definition, though it sort of comes at asexual/aromantic from the other angle: it's not that the feelings are missing, or that there's an aversion to the idea, it's just that sex and romance have such a low priority that they evaporate. (In that sense perhaps it's more "celibate by inclination" or something?)
