Because people ship people.

I mean, they ship canon straight characters in slash fics, or make gay characters fall for the opposite gender. They ship people who never showed any chemistry on screen - hell they ship people who never met on screen.

I can totally see how people see Sherlock as asexual in canon (as you say, a lot of hints were dropped - but even then, I wouldn't expect there to be any less shipping or smut fic.

I mean, not about whether he is or is not asexual, I don't feel qualified to judge, but, about the fic. There's a ton where he's asexual and a ton where he's not. Google up some rec lists, maybe?

Also asexual_fandom has fic from Sherlock and other fic.
And if I may toot my own horn: Bright College Days (there's a link to part two at the end of pat one). Don't be scared off by the "/", his relationships are not sexual.

I have to say, when I've written Sherlock as sexual (and will probably continue to off and on), I've become inclined to write him as asexual recently.

Yeah, I read him as ace too, but...the whole "clear as day" thing not so much, since Moffat's already said that he's not asexual. Moffat thinks writing about asexuals is "boring." :(

I think it was either him or Benedict that also referred to Irene as "awakening his sleeping sexuality" or something like that.

Think of a different character, any character really, and replace the phrase "I don't understand how anyone can see him as sexual" with "I don't understand how anyone can see him as gay/bisexual/what have you" and I think you have your answer. People love shipping everyone with anyone. You can have a character that never gives any indication whatsoever of being interested in men, and he'll still be involved in one of the biggest slash pairings in the fandom. People have different interpretations of characters and that's okay. Sherlock is not canonically asexual no matter how badly you want him to be, but it's still okay to write a bunch of asexual Sherlock fic. As soon as you accept the fact that not everyone views him the way you do, the happier you'll be in the fandom.

I agree that Sherlock is asexual, but I don't think it's "CLEAR AS DAY". It's open for interpretation. That's what I like about it so much. As for the fic, I've come across some fairly good ace!Sherlock fic. I've also found that reading John/Sherlock fic that is lower rater (between G and PG-13) it can oftentimes be read as asexual homoromantic!Sherlock. Which I love.

i kind of agee with this (and made a similar secret earlier). but i dunno, i'm weird about fic i like. i've read sexual sherlock fic, but it always feels slightly ooc to me. i feel the same when i read slash fics with two characters i feel are very straight. but i love slash, especially of the more erotic variety, so i have a hard time finding fic that i can really get into. i read a lot of 'they're not actually gay but are for some crazy reason inspired to hump each other' fics. but i think most people find it pretty easy to suspend their disbelief. so maybe not all of those people who are writing sexual sherlock actually think he's sexual in canon.

I'm really not trying to be rude when I say this, but I think you're misinterpreting how people work.

The majority of fandom does not give a shit about canon. They will swear it up and down left and right, but they do not give a shit.

They want to ship. They will ship. They're going to ship forever. Whether there is blatant evidence against it or not doesn't matter.

Given that both Moffat and Cumerbatch have pretty much come right out and said that Sherlock's heterosexual, I really don't think you can claim that it's "clear". You can certainly opt to read the character that way if that's how he pings you, but it's no more an unassailable canon fact than the idea that he's gay or bi is.

There's tons of asexuality fic. Just go look for it, OP. It's a pretty common thing that's discussed in the fandom. Like, I see it discussed or brought up almost every day by some person or another. There are whole comms and tags for it on AO3.

People see what they want to see. Personally I DON'T think he's asexual, I just think his sexuality would be expressed in unconventional ways, and I'm entitled to that opinion, just like you're entitled to yours. If you can't deal with other people's opinions and you're too lazy to find people who agree with you or you're not willing to stop caring that others don't agree with you then you might as well leave and spare everyone the whining.

And I can't seriously understand how anyone could see him as asexual. Not trolling, btw, I'm being genuine. I do not see any indication he's asexual. I just see a lot of projecting, tbh. I'm looking for a really old Gundam Wing fanfic. Like, circa 2000-2001. It was posted primarily to the TreizeML Yahoo Group (I already looked, but it's been overrun with spam and I can't even remember enough of the story's title to do a search). It was Treize-centric, and featured a particularly shitty Mary Sue. And Treize had an evil identical twin brother. I really wish I could be more helpful than that, but that's all I remember.

If anyone here has it saved by some miracle or could point me in the right direction, I'd be much obliged.
