Yeah, I read him as ace too, but...the whole "clear as day" thing not so much, since Moffat's already said that he's not asexual. Moffat thinks writing about asexuals is "boring." :(

I think it was either him or Benedict that also referred to Irene as "awakening his sleeping sexuality" or something like that.

IA with whomever upthread stated that Moffat is not the end-all, be-all of Sherlock. He is one of THREE writer's and is only a co-creator.

That's true, but I was responding specifically to the secret's impression that he is obviously asexual and that is THE way to read him.

I mean death of the author is a thing and all, but when at least one head writer is writing him as straight but repressed, and Benedict also considers his character repressed ("burned by a woman in his past" or however he put it) then it's not really a case of "clear as day" asexual.

Cumberbatch was the one who said, "Sherlock was asexual until he met Irene". He also earlier (during S1) said "He's asexual... I think he was burned by a woman". Cuz being "burned" by a love interest is what makes you asexual, right? And meeting the right woman (and of course it's a woman...) makes you sexual again. Jesus... Seriously, replace "asexual" with "gay" in both those sentences, and you'll see just how ridiculous those statements are. BTW, this is why I don't read interviews from him anymore.

Seriously, as annoying as Moffat's views on asexuality are, at least he seems to understand that it's an orientation*, and not just something that happens to people when they the have relationship problems, and can be "dropped" when the right person shows up.

*Before anyone brings it, up, no he did not use the term "the choice of an asexual". In context:

"It’s the choice of a monk, not the choice of an asexual."

I read this to mean: A monk chooses not to have sex, an asexual doesn't. Of course, this is wrong, some asexuals do have sex. But again, at least he seems to understand being asexual isn't a choice.

I think he might have meant "abstinent". A lot of people think asexual just means you don't have sex, rather than it bean an orientation of sorts. I would be surprised if anyone irl who wasn't on the internet a lot really knew much about asexuality.

That could be, but that's not the word he used. And it's not like "abstinent" is a new or unusual term; if anything, it seems like someone would be far more likely to use than "asexual".

A lot of people think of "asexuality" as referring to things like amoebas and shit. Before I heard people talking about it on the internet a few years ago, I never would have thought someone would call themselves asexual. It initially seemed very strange to me until I researched it further

It's really not worth getting butthurt over. The construction of asexual is problematic as it seems to mean both "not interested in sex" and "not participating in sex". It would be the same as if you said "not sexual". Asexual was very poorly coined.

Cumberbatch most likely meant grey-a but didn't know how to express that. He clearly understands the no interest in sex part but is unlikely to be aware that asexuals can experience sexual attraction, which you seem to be unaware of as well. So, yeah, you're kind of a bigot yourself.

Seriously? Are you even familiar with ACD canon? Irene's always been a woman and always had a unique relationship with the misogynistic Sherlock.

But he didn't say Sherlock is an asexual who found himself experiencing sexual attraction; he say he was asexual UNTIL he met Irene. Imagine if Ben said, "Sherlock was gay until he met
Irene". Not, "He met Irene and started questioning his sexuality", just "he was gay until..."

You really seem to be fishing for ways to turn this into deliberate acephobia and not a very easy mistake. If Cumberbatch is unaware that grey-A exists, it stands to reason that he would think Sherlock's interest in Irene means that Sherlock had to depart from asexuality to be interested. Sherlock's interest in Irene is canon. Just because Sherlock and John's relationship is homoerotic as hell doesn't mean there's any sexual interest on Sherlock's part. Are you calling ACD a bigot? I really don't understand what you think you're trying to say.

I hear this same shit with bisexuality all the time. "She went lesbian" or "He was straight until he met him". Both examples are bisexual, but a lot of people see it as an abrupt change rather than a shift along a spectrum. It's the way people understand sexuality because they don't know any better. Asexuality's name makes this an easy mistake, so I don't see why you're all flustered about this. It's not like some sexualities where you can look at the name and immediately know what the meaning is.

Really, ultimately, my point is this: People sometimes use Cumberbatch's comments that Sherlock's not asexual to bolster their claim that he's not (you can see examples of it in this very tread). But if Cumberbatch doesn't even understand what asexuality is, why should I take his word?

Mind you, in the much lauded interview where he mentioned fanworks I swear he started to say 'that's disgusting' before he realised what a backlash that would cause and went all nicey nicey. Prat. My two cents: it seems to be a matter of interpretation. What one person sees as asexuality another sees as celibate by choice and another sees as gay. My take: whatever he is, he isn't a Kinsey 0.
