Might be a little uncomfortable if you're dating a former teacher*, but they aren't likely to make a huge deal out of it as long as you're not considered a minor, and they aren't currently your teacher.
You do have to remember that the US' age of consent it is generally something like 3 years higher than it is in France [which...iirc is like, 15, yeah?] So it's not just social issue most of the time, it's also a legal issue.
*Though, if it's a former college professor, then people are even less likely to be uncomfortable about it.
