In my Gundam Wing days, I jumped right on board the, "Heero and Duo are in love! Relena is a horrible bitch who needs to die violently!" bandwagon.

I kind of want to rewatch the series just to give poor Relena a fair chance.

I rewatched GWing a year or so back, and while I've moved on from "I want Relena to DIE" to more of an apathetic stance, I still want to shake the holy shit out of her because seriously... what the hell?

But to be fair this time around I discovered I want to drop-kick Quatre, Wu-Fei and Zechs as well, so. (Trieze I discovered I liked a lot more. He made more sense to me as an adult and that ... kinda terrifies me.)

Treize was always my favourite character, even when I was thirteen. Not sure what that says about me! But yeah, it might be interesting to see how my opinions on characters will change between age thirteen and age twenty-five.

I loved Treize back when I was 13, haven't rewatched the series since. I never liked teen characters, I loved the chessmaster adults! Watching the idealistic teens once they've become adults is far more interesting to me.

I'm thinking of doing this soon. I have old VHS tapes of the Gundam Wing series that I painstakingly recorded myself in a box somewhere. Better to do it before school starts again!

I disliked Relena too, although not for getting in the way of slash shipping. XD I just thought she was way too perfect to be taken seriously. (She's 14 years old and a secret princess too? You have got to be kidding me!)

When I was in the GW fandom, I was a fan of Relena, even though I was a slasher. I mainlined the series from beginning to end over the course of a week and one thing I think many people from that time were missing was that Relena was not meant to start out as the perfect princess. Why she was getting painted that way, I'll never understand.

Even by the end of the series (before Endless Waltz) she was held as the ideal for pacifism but the entire series was a testament to the fact that even that sort of idealized world wasn't possible. It took radical action (Treize's sacrifice) to jolt the world to move beyond war but Relena's other extreme of complete and total pacifism was naive, which Treize pointed out time and again.

But it was in Endless Waltz where Relena showed the biggest leap in growth as a character. By the end of that, she was no longer naive or innocent or even subscribing to complete and total pacifism.

tl;dr Relena, over the course of the series, showed the biggest growth as a character.

Yeah, that's why I'm thinking I might come to appreciate her. I was very, very easily influenced by 1x2 sites and fics that were incredibly... well, anti-Relena, and that sort of tainted the view I had of her, I guess? Like, I bought in to the whole 'Relena is a spoilt psycho brat who's stalking Heero', and sort of refused to see any actual character growth she showed.

Which, just thinking back, she showed enormously. I kind of get the feeling I'll really like her on a rewatch - I'm a sucker for great character development. And, just from memory, she shows it in spades.
