Embarrassing fannish opinions you've once held

(Anonymous) 2012-08-07 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on, most people have had really stupid opinions about fandom stuff that they've grown out of. Did you sincerely believe a huge tool or a villain was a poor misunderstood woobie? Did you childishly give a perfectly nice character the Ron the Death Eater-treatment for not liking your pet Draco in Leather Pants or for getting in the way of your ship? Were you butthurt about immature shit like Sirius's death or how Aang/Katara was endgame?

Regale us with your shame!

I once used to think Phineas and Ferb is the "epitome" of modern Disney animation and when I heard it lost to Spongebob Squarepants in the Kids Choice Awards, I refused to watch Nickolodeon for MONTHS.

Oh past me, those were the days... XD

Well I had the whole romanticizing of the "Phantom of the Opera" story. I'm not as bad at it anymore, though I must admit I still dort of like the dynamic.

I renounced my love of Superman shortly after finding out what a "Mary Sue" was, because my foolish little mind reasoned that it was wrong for me to like a character who was such a blatant Mary Sue. My foolish little mind also reasoned that even though Batman has many Mary Sue traits, it was OK for me to like him because he acts like a dick sometimes (and therefore is ~*flawed*~, unlike the perfect saintly Superman).

I was such a dumbass.

I maaaaay be doing this right now with pitching in with the 'no, I don't believe Coulson is dead' camp in Avengers fandom.

I was also in the 'Sirius isn't really dead' camp, too. In general if there's an uncertain death, I tend to go NOPE THEY'RE ALIVE especially if I liked the character. 'Never found the body' tends to equal 'is still alive' to me.

I was a Harry/Hermione shipper - NOT a Harmonian. But before I found internet fandom (up through the third book) I thought they were gonna end up together.

And I thought Ron was gonna betray them.

Sometimes I missed the point.

In my Gundam Wing days, I jumped right on board the, "Heero and Duo are in love! Relena is a horrible bitch who needs to die violently!" bandwagon.

I kind of want to rewatch the series just to give poor Relena a fair chance.

I used to turn my nose up at hardcore slash shippers in the LOTR movie verse. I had a lot of convoluted reasons for it, too. Nevermind that I was a happy slasher of everything else, ever.

Nowadays, I'm happy to let people ship whatever, but I'm still fairly ashamed of my hypocrisy.

I did Leather-Pants Draco for a while there, yeah. Apparently I shipped him with Hermione. Don't quite know what I was thinking. O_____o

But wait, butthurt about Sirius' death is a bad thing?! I mean, I get why it was thematically logical & I don't think Jo's a terrible writer for doing it or anything, but I was and shall forever remain sad about it.

I hated the "fangirl" character that used to chase around Matt in Digimon. Wished her physical pain, etc etc. I was also one of the ones that through a fit over Sora dating Matt (although, to be perfectly honest, I'm still not quite over that--I just ship Tai and Matt together instead, pffft.)

I used to hate most slash — not all slash, but most slash, especially between best friends — because I felt that anyone who slashed two friends was a shallow nasty excuse for a human being who was so emotionally and morally bankrupt that they believed the only reason two friends would have deep emotions for each other or care about each other or worry about what happened to each other was if they were providing each other with sex.

Suffice to say, I definitely got over it ;) Although I do still sometimes groan at the fact that really emotional and affectionate gen friendship is so hard to find. Also in my defense, I was equally annoyed by people who shipped het couples for the same reason, and that phase happened while I was in a pretty immature fandom that would say stuff like "but he was worried that he might die, therefore he must want to have sex with him!" which really rubbed me the wrong way back when I was too naive to understand how shipping worked.

I used to read terribly ooc fanfiction -- the kind that took the characters from light happy stories (Cardcaptor Sakura and Gakuen Alice, though the later did get dark recently) and threw them into gritty AUs (though not too dark, since I was like 13). The cheerful lead girls became broken, sarcastic badasses. Personalities and histories changed willy-nilly.

I guess the opinion here was that I liked it a lot? Looking back I cringe, though there's a tiny part of me that wants to look the stuff back up and see how well it was actually written.

Though it has probably been deleted by now, seeing as it was all on fanfiction.net

I literally bawled when Tokka didn't end up being canon. I was so assured that it would be. Oh, and I hated Suki with the passion of a thousand blazing suns.

Now, I still think Suki is boring, but I now realize that Tokka was never meant to be. Sokka and Toph are better off as bros. ♥

I've discussed this before, but I was really butthurt that the monster in Harry's chest was hungry for Ginny. I wanted Harry/Luna to be endgame. My ire has faded over time, but not completely.

I used character bash Taichi from Digimon 01 pretty hardcore. I had a real hate-on for him when I was a kid. I got over it and he became a character I really liked, but, for some reason, I really hated him early on.

If I had been in the DBZ fandom I would have woobiefied Vegeta.

I used to hate Thane Krios (from 'Mass Effect 2') pretty bad, because he was designed solely to be appealing to female players -and yes, that was stated by the designers, too-, and he was announced as a romance option before Garrus was. (Note that at the time, I was a rabid Garrus Vakarian stan. So yes, jealousy was a huge part of my hate-on for Thane)

I stubbornly held onto this opinion for a while after playing the game, but I later cooled off and eventually renounced my hatred of him after writing a fan fic involving him and getting to know some other Thane fans, who ended up becoming some pretty awesome friends in the long run. And Thane is now one of my favorite characters in the series.

I thought Tamking Riki was one of the best AnK fanfics ever. I was gonna buy a hardcopy of the set, including a preorder for the third volume, but I chickened out at the last minute. Good thing too 'cause the author found God shortly after and deleted all her stories and demolished her publishing company.

The wank that followed was mind-blowingly amazing.

...I should have put this in one of the wank threads.

I used to think Barney Stinson was an amazing wonderful human being who should never be judged for anything he ever did to women because Shannon dumped him, and that all his friends were horrible abusive jerks for daring to judge him for manipulating them all the time and being a gigantic asshole to his one-night stands. I also thought Ted was a horrible person who "betrayed" Barney because of that time he used sign language to tell a girl that Barney was lying to her to get into her panties.

*shudder*

Harry Potter: I believed Peter Pettigrew would feel remorse for his actions and help Harry out in the last book and so I kept defending him. In a way, he did feel remorse and he did end up helping Harry, but it was pretty anti-climatic. Yes, I woobified Peter. The shaaaaame.
To this day I still have an odd fondness for Peter, and I get bummed out when I see fan-art of the Marauders with no Peter, but I mostly keep it to myself.

The most embarrassing fannish opinion though? I used to hate Jean Grey from X-Men because I was jealous of Wolverine but also judged her taste in men for liking Cyclops. Petty and immature, I know. I've since come around, don't worry. I like her now, but I still hate Cyclops.

And, uh, that's pretty much it. My tastes and opinions have pretty much stayed the same throughout the years.

I used to really like the We're Not Gay trope, and now I find it kinda skeevy and really problematic.

I still hold the embarrassing fannish opinion that if it makes me cry, I can overlook a whole lot in a fic--like characterization and standardized spelling. LOL If I'm in a mood for it, I will devour a fic where Ron cries lustily on a daily basis because Neville does not return his love and EVERYONE IS SO MEAN AND DOES NOT UNDERSTAND AND HIS HEART IS BROKEN OMG! I mean, I can objectively tell when a story is bad, but I will still gobble up some pretty bad fic that hits a narrative or emotional kink.

Well...hmm. Basically just the passionate hatred of any ship that wasn't my own, I'd say.

Like, there was a time when I was fucking militant. "Bitch, you ship Lady with GentB rather than GentA? I'LL CUT YOU!" Now? I'm all, "what's it even matter?" I have my favored ships, but I'll read fic about other ships for the hell of it, and I'll even write fics about other ships because it stretches me as a writer.

I'm embarrassed about how irrational I once was. Man, these are fictional peeps! It doesn't matter as much as I once thought it did.

In a Draco/Hermione fic (I know, I know) set after Voldemort's downfall, I did kill off Ron, but it was a heroic death in the Final Battle and at the time (before HBP) I did think JKR would kill Ron in the last book because of the wizard chess sacrifice in Sorceror's Stone. There was that whole 7 moves = 7 years/books theory- does anyone remember that? I thought that person had figured out the whole thing, that the chess game would be a metaphor for the arc of the series! Then by Half Blood Prince it became really obvious that JKR just made stuff up as she went along and no she didn't plan everything to correspond to one scene in her first book.

I used to totally roll my eyes at Sherlock/John slash. I only read gen, because I was like "they're just friends ok." Yeah, and then it turned out that if you're just reading gen in the Sherlock fandom, you're going to run out of fic in a very short while. So I got used to it and I have happily been reading slash in the fandom ever since. Yay!

I also used to be of the opinion that reading fanfiction meant you were really weird and that all fanfiction was really awful. Clearly my opinion has changed because in the past eight months my recreational reading has been almost exclusively fanfiction based.
