There's this fic that is epically long (I love novel length fic) and has a gazillion kudos and reviews (so people must like it, and I'm people). It was tagged as a Friends!AU and the summary sounded like a cute "look at these guys doing wacky, everyday things and learning about life" thing. It sounded like it was worth a look, at least. So, I started reading the authors note at the beginning. As soon as the author indicated that Friends!AU literally meant an AU based on the show 'Friends,' I hit the back button so fast my browser got whiplash. I hate that show too much to read fic based on it. Pretty stupid, huh?

So, what books, movies, shows, fics, etc. have you avoided for stupid reasons? 

You can call them squishies, but I'd call them jellyfish. And remember the tiny spider babies?

Hello! It's a request post today and we're featuring Things with Tentacles That Go Bloop, aka Jellyfish. Some of these may be cute, some of these may not be cute, but hopefully these pics are, if nothing else, interesting to look at! Also, lots of jellyfish look totally different to each other, so let's have a go at some of that variety. We're starting with one of the largest jellyfishes in the world, then one of the smallests (which rests amongst the most deadly), and from then on... well, who knows?

Speaking of jellyfish, though, did you know there's a place where there's a whole lake of golden jellyfish that wander from one side of the lake to the other on a daily basis? Swimming in it is apparently a popular tourist activity. You can check out a video of what it looks like underwater here. Pretty surreal, isn't it?

Also, I'm not linking to anything but Wikipdeia here but I'm sure you know how to search for things- if you like what you see and want more well written jellyfish nerdery with a side of cute and touching as well as affectionate lampshading of geeks, do check out Kuragehime! It's a lovely manga that was made into an anime, and one that I would consider well worth your time if you have an interest in such things.

So I guess in the wake of it, and the Aurora shooting in the areas of the web I hang out, huge swathes is being written about the entitlement complex that leads white men to perpetrate such crimes. It's all sounds very grand, and deeply cutting psychological breakdowns of this kind of person and the reason behind their prevalence.

There's only one small flaw.

It just happens to not be true. White men are no more likely to be spree killers then any other group. Black men are actually the only ones slightly overrepresented when controlling for population.

Found it all very instructive. Brings to mind one of my favourite quotes -

inspired by insanenoodlyguy, I uploaded my own shitty sherlock holmes fanfiction to the internet! And I dedicate it to you, fs. You should feel very honoured because it is truly my magnum opus. It was a joke that got out of hand because I somehow ended up with 15 chapters of inconsistently written shit. And it's not even finished.

Fandom jokes/memes you're tired of?

I'm thinking more of jokes from the actual show/video game/etc. rather than the fandom itself? But there's a significant overlap, so either one is fine.

Persona 4's been getting a ton of merchandise since the anime adaptation and everything else, which is nice because I love figures and I love the character designs. Most of it's Yukiko, which isn't terrible since I still like her design. However, besides Alter not re-releasing their Yukiko, almost every single Yukiko has those joke glasses as an accessory; when Megahouse released their promo shots, I commented on another site about how sick I was of them (like would anyone seriously display her with them when she's not a Nendoroid or a Figma? but their Yukiko is ugly anyway, so whatever) and the only reply I received was "Have you even played the game?"

AAH, it just really irritated me because I have played the game! I never found the glasses funny no matter how many times they used them!

But that's my insignificant story, how about you other F!S readers?

I figured we all liked the MsScribe Saga, so we should share some of the other great nonfiction storytelling that's out there. Bonus if it's fandom-related. I'm mostly interested in fairly lengthy, quality writing - not like 'here is a blog post I agree with'.

Here's one of my all-time favourites: The Perfect Game by Joshuah Bearman(PDF), or blog link for comments. It's about the ontologies of Pacman & Ms PacMan and the culture of people who play classic arcade games competitively.

I've already linked A Rape In Cyberspace on all of the MsScribe threads in the last few months, but it's a true classic of gamer wank and it really digs into all the weirdness of life on the internet.

I had this totally weird dream a couple nights ago that was directly related to FS.
In FS I often see discussion about kinkmemes, although I've never been to one as it doesn't interest me I have learned through FS how one works, with people submitting prompts for fics.

In my dream, I went to a kinkmeme. Although, I went to a PHYSICAL kinkmeme. It was an actual real life location. It didn't seem to have a fandom associated. There was me and a bunch of other people queueing up to go into the kinkmeme, which was a classroom like setting. We all had to sit down and write our prompts without letting anyone see them ( it was strictly anon). I wrote my prompt although I don't remember it, and all the people around me were peering over to see what id written. I was yelling at them that they weren't allowed to look as it was secret. At one point this guy tried to snatch my prompt off me and I yelled 'FUCK OFF IM ON ANON HERE! IM ANON!' ...odd.
Then we all had to hand our prompts in to a girl at the front of the room who was the 'mod'.
Then I woke up. Incredibly surreal experience of Internet comms being physical places 0_0

I've been away forever because my boss only gave me night shifts for like three weeks. And now even though I have several evenings off I am really busy getting ready for school and Gen Con.

So this might be the only night I visit in, like, a month. lol

Once I settle into school I expect I'll be here a little more, but not as much as I was in the middle of the summer.

My boyfriend of some time now (Three years) has been acting pretty badly for most of this year. He of course denies my allegation and says I'm blowing this out of proportion and that he's not doing anything wrong. Oh, and that these problems are partly caused by me...but I'll get into that.

So far he has...I don't want to call it 'slut shaming' because I don't want to use the term incorrectly, but..He broke up with me after a long stint (A month) of being very insulting to me. Screaming at me for taking someone else's advise for a game we (used) to play together. Saying I didn't love him because of it. And just fighting with me about not doing what he told me to do, or listening to him enough. After which he'd ignore me for long stretches of time, almost daily. I was pretty upset, and decided to try a different relationship with a mutual friend. (This didn't last long) He threatened to kill himself if I didn't come back to him, going step by step in emails about how many pills he was taking, and how it was all on me. That he had nothing left without me.

When the relationship fell through, I went back with him. Things were okay for a week or so, but then he started getting really bitter. Telling me how insecure I made him, and how could I do anything sexual with someone I had only been seeing for a few weeks. Whenever he brought this up, he would talk negatively about it...(I don't care you made him cum. Yeah, you just got him off the first day. You enjoyed getting him off more than me. How could you do that with him, how degrading. Etetc) I brought up the term 'slut shaming' to him, and he said he couldn't possibly be doing it because 1)he didn't know what it was and 2)he never used the word 'slut', etc. (If I'm using it incorrectly, I apologize)

It's been four months now, and he still brings up this very brief relationship I had. How it made him insecure, how I liked 'fucking' him more, how I'd rather be getting off the ex instead of him, how I 'messed him up', and so on. He yells sometimes, or goes back to talking about me being so ~sexual~ with the Ex (I wasn't -that- sexual, but he refuses to listen...)

So, am I just over-reacting? Is this my fault? I guess I could see how it could be...I don't know what to do at this point. He always promises to never bring up the Ex/try to get over his insecurity, but that calm never lasts long. Especially if I don't do something sexual for him (Feeling uncomfortable or in pain, or something like that. He'll bring up the Ex and says I'd do something for the Ex, but now him. So in the end I give up and get him off...afterwards he goes back to playing whatever game he's playing at the moment. :/)

Got feedback from a management scheme at work I failed to get into this morning.

They described me as coming off as methodical and statistically driven. They wanted spontaneity whereas I came off as measured and careful in what I was saying, too 'calculated'.

Man, what a bullshit critique, if someone is coming off as spontaneous in an interview chances having not gone in prepared - which given the competition is like two thousand applicants suggests an incompetent lack of legwork beforehand.

Still, setting that aside, this isn't the first time I've had this kind of feedback (I actually got 'cold and detached' in one case).

So f!s, advice or links to articles about not having interviewers perceive you in terms that sound like the personality profile of a serial killer.

"Saeninn back home find out, I'll be in for it, to be sure." He laughed -- too brisk, too sharp. Then his face fell and he looked on the verge of tears. "Oh gods, I don't know what I'm doing."

Kija glanced around the room. People milled about, taking in their surroundings with obvious interest. A couple huddled together in the far corner, whispering and giggling. None had been here before -- he could tell. They were here for the show, whatever it would prove to be, drawn finally to the oddity of the Hold by the promise of the sensational. He doubted any would decide to Devote themselves, but neither would they face reprisal. Even he, who would be Solenarei in truth come the morrow, and who should be rightly seeking the guidance of his Principal, would be seen only to have indulged on his last truly free day. He smiled at the strange man and touched him lightly on the shoulder.

"It couldn't be that bad, could it?" he asked. "There's nothing wrong, here; only different."

"They sure don't think that. Say the Powers are separate for a reason. Mixing's going against the way of things." He shuddered and passed the back of his hand over his forehead. "Seem 'em run fellows out for less."

Kija furrowed his brow. He suddenly very keenly felt his privilege as a citizen of Harloure. "Then, if it's not too forward of me...why are you here?"

"Wanted to see what it's about, is all. With all that's been happening, I just..." He sighed, closed his eyes. "I wanna see if someone else's got an answer."

Something sparked in the back of Kija's mind, a sense of import driven by skills as yet too poorly developed to offer clarity. He thought of the hushed conversation of the higher Alasyrs and wondered why the concerns of a farmer should somehow seem related. There were many things he had left to learn, but it was not so much that he couldn't plainly read the signs.

I feel so awkward in my fandom's kink meme. All the prompts are things like "Character A/Character B, first time sex fluff" and "Character B/Character C, romantic date."

It's so bad that the couple of people who posted really kinky prompts actually got called trolls. In fact, I'm pretty sure I would get flamed if I posted what I wanted even though "everything goes." :/

I seriously have no idea what I am doing, going to do, or any dreams about my life.

tl;dr:
I know I am depressed, but I've been depressed for so long(basically since I was 10) that I don't even know if I could get out of it, or fix my life from being such a shitbag for so long. I'm 26 and have only had two jobs. I haven't had a job in over 3 years because I never get anything back from applications and don't have the guts to call about it and talk myself up. I tried college and couldn't get through 2 semesters without dropping out.

I mean, maybe I could get through all this, maybe I could get a job and get through college if I had any idea about what I want my life to be, but I don't. Not a damn clue.

I've had this OC I've wanted to use in fanfic for forever. I finally have an fic idea I know she'd be perfect for, but I know she's immediately going to be thrown into the MS category, not that I'm going to let that stop me because I just love the idea I've gotten. I'm just bracing myself for "Eww what a Mary Sue (character) is!" if I get reviews at all.

Does anyone else have OCs they are fond of, and really want to use despite the dreaded Mary Sue label?

I really did not like it. And I suppose that, yes, some of my gripes are with it straying way too far from the original in intent and message...but I just don't understand why it needed everything it did. Making the Once-ler a kind hearted guy who just got lead astray by his family? The random inclussion of a second 'villain' (O'Hare just seemed so...tacked on to me, IDK) and the ending...The Once-Ler and the Lorax were never friends. Why turn it into a buddy movie with a romance sub-plot?

And was it just me, or does young!Once-Ler look like a still-living Jack Skellington? Especially with that hand gesture during his "I'm bad" song, lol

This, even though I am anon in all forms, and therefore no one is aware but I that I am not who posted previously. After all, anons reply to anons all the time.

But even though you don't actually know, I don't want you to think poorly of me. So, when people respond negatively to something that I say, I also respond negatively as a "different" anon in the hopes that I can get someone to agree. Then, I feel better.

OF COURSE.

The question you must now ask yourself is: are all anons just "me?" When you see two anons arguing, is it really just the same person creating drama for the hell of it? How do you know that there are actually different people commenting on a particular topic? Oh, sure, the responses are separated by time. But couldn't that person simply have...waited?

DISTRUST. SUSPICION. You always should have had it. And now, whether you've wanted it or not, it's with you. Even if you recognize my foul plot, there's still a voice in the back of your head saying, "that kind of makes sense. What do I really know about these anons?"
