I don't mind that general comments turned into advice column, it's actually more fun than the secret threads a lot of the time. But damn, it's depressing how many people do not seem to realize they are dating/married to uber asshats. Really? The long string of assholish things they do to you didn't tip you off?

A lot of the time when you're in an abusive situation it just reads as being 'the way things are', because it's very hard to get an external reality check on your own life. It doesn't help that abusers tend to gaslight constantly by telling you that their behaviour is perfectly normal, or that it's all your fault and they're not doing anything wrong.

Abuse is never black and white - from any family situation or relationship, there's good things along with the bad and that can make it confusing when you look at the big picture. Eg, the classic trope of the abuser buying flowers for their victim. It can take years to even be clear enough on what happened to say 'I was abused'.

This post is pretty helpful, imo.

I think most people don't want it to be true. I consider myself very aware of things like that but I still ended up in a kind of abusive friendship with a depressive person who told me every day about all the instances that he thought about killing himself.

I only realized that it had to stop when I started feeling depressed. So yeah, I think really love makes you blind *shrugs*
