The thing about this kind of stuff is that people tend to limit themselves in what they can/will think about trying.

For years, I was convinced that I was going to join the military, and it was the only option for me. When my app fell through for officership, I was at loose ends. My sister was going to Korea to teach English. So I thought-- what the hell, why not. The Korean government paid for my airfare there, paid for my apartment, gave me an awesome salary, and paid my way back home. I didn't even have a passport when I applied, and I live in a village with ~100 people in it, but I still managed to get to an airport and get a plane to Korea and back again.

Since then, I've come up with three other job fields I am leaving myself open to try out, and am going to grad school to study some stuff I never would have considered before.

I just turned 25 in May. I was rejected from Marine officership shortly after I turned 23, and turned 24 in Korea. Who the fuck knows what I will be doing when I'm 26.

The point it? The sky is the limit. Don't get discouraged, and don't give into the media fear mongering. Yes, the job situation is tight, but there are always, always ways.

If college or university isn't right for you, check into apprenticeships. Or even courses from community colleges. Maybe academia isn't your thing.

Which part? Korea? Unfortunately, you'd need a BA degree for that. Google EPIK. I applied to it through a recruiting agency called Flying Cow, based in England, but they handled my American app.
