Well-written nonfic stories & articles

I figured we all liked the MsScribe Saga, so we should share some of the other great nonfiction storytelling that's out there. Bonus if it's fandom-related. I'm mostly interested in fairly lengthy, quality writing - not like 'here is a blog post I agree with'.

Here's one of my all-time favourites: The Perfect Game by Joshuah Bearman(PDF), or blog link for comments. It's about the ontologies of Pacman & Ms PacMan and the culture of people who play classic arcade games competitively.

I've already linked A Rape In Cyberspace on all of the MsScribe threads in the last few months, but it's a true classic of gamer wank and it really digs into all the weirdness of life on the internet.

Why "Death Star"-like projects are a bad idea, for both operational and programmatic reasons.

Not exactly story-telling but it's nonfic?

i've been avoiding the msscribe threads until i have a chance to read through the whole event, so this is the first time i've seen the link to "a rape in cyberspace", and i just wanted to say that it is absolutely fascinating. i'm definitely going to be mulling over the implications for the next few days, but i think the most striking thing is that even 17 years later, people still are still debating over how life online relates to life offline.

i wish that i had something as awesome to link back to you! the closest i can come is a review of the iron giant and [personal profile] melannen's excellent overview of polyamory in several different works of fiction; the comments there are well worth reading, and span from squeeing at the topic to more discussion on polyamory and gender in fiction and how those relate back to real life.
