Bitching about work thread
They described me as coming off as methodical and statistically driven. They wanted spontaneity whereas I came off as measured and careful in what I was saying, too 'calculated'.
Man, what a bullshit critique, if someone is coming off as spontaneous in an interview chances having not gone in prepared - which given the competition is like two thousand applicants suggests an incompetent lack of legwork beforehand.
Still, setting that aside, this isn't the first time I've had this kind of feedback (I actually got 'cold and detached' in one case).
So f!s, advice or links to articles about not having interviewers perceive you in terms that sound like the personality profile of a serial killer.
Re: Bitching about work thread
(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 12:29 am (UTC)(link)One thing that I can say I've consistently done is that I've paused to consider before answering a question that required a "story." In other words, if I'm asked to describe an instance where I've demonstrated a particular skill, I'll actually visibly cycle through my memory before I answer. I've even, in a couple of cases, said "may I have a moment to think about that?" Hell, I actually once gave an example that the interviewers (there were two of them) didn't like, so they asked me for another one (which I gave, of course) -- and I got the call offering me the job less than an hour later. I also have no trouble describing some of my weaknesses and trouble areas. I just keep it fairly innocuous ("I'm working on my confidence" is good; "I have punctuality issues" is not. Not that I actually have punctuality issues, but you get the point).
As strange as it might sound, I think that the key to projecting a sense that you're more "human" is just allowing yourself to seem a little flawed. Perfection, in theory, is great. But in practice, it often seems contrived.

Re: Bitching about work thread
I don't have any really have any advice on how to not seem cold, seeing as I'm trying to relearn that attitude to apply to my current work environment. I'm trying to avoid the petty office bullshit, backstabbing, tattle-telling and politics by keeping a low profile.
I think interviewers are looking for a more casual, conversational interview now, as opposed to a prepared question-and-answer thing. At least in my and my SO's experiences. They're looking to get a taste of your personality and people skills, not so much how well you can do the job. They can read your qualifications on the resume.
