Things you've skipped over/avoided for stupid reasons

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-08-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
There's this fic that is epically long (I love novel length fic) and has a gazillion kudos and reviews (so people must like it, and I'm people). It was tagged as a Friends!AU and the summary sounded like a cute "look at these guys doing wacky, everyday things and learning about life" thing. It sounded like it was worth a look, at least. So, I started reading the authors note at the beginning. As soon as the author indicated that Friends!AU literally meant an AU based on the show 'Friends,' I hit the back button so fast my browser got whiplash. I hate that show too much to read fic based on it. Pretty stupid, huh?

So, what books, movies, shows, fics, etc. have you avoided for stupid reasons?

I put off reading the Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce for *ages* even though I was a huge fan of hers already. The reason I avoided it? The first four books were written for children and I thought I was too grown-up for it (I think I may have been about 18). I finally picked up the series when I was desperate for something new to read, and flash-forward to now? My love for the CoM series outweighs my love for the collected Tortall works by a mile. And I put it off for the stupedist reason.

(Though Kel's quartet will always be my favorite single series by TP, and Squire my favorite book. Probably. I'm not sure how she could ever top them.)

Avoiding Psych because the man who broke my heart loved and recced it.

Sailor Moon. A former friend of mine was huuuuge into it, then we had a pretty epic falling-out. I still associate that show with her crazy and I want none of it.

Also, Taylor Swift. If I were 15, I'd probably love her. But I am not 15. She makes my ears hurt.

I don't think that's stupid. I hate Friends too, as well as most things in that genre. If I do not like the show or the characters - how would I like the fic, even if it's good? I'm going to assume the reviews and kudos are from people actually liking the show, which is totally different.

Most of Harry Potter. I read the first two in the late 90s, before the hype machine got started, enjoyed them well enough, but then when the whole OMG BEST SERIES EVER!!!1 machine got rolling it completely killed my desire to read any of the others, because obv I had read much better things. I got spoiled for the rest of the series by fandom osmosis and never did bother to go back.

I have an irrational hatred of and lack of desire to play Megaman X, because it is not Classic.

This does not apply to any other series in the franchise, all of which I have played at least a bit of, and most of which I am quite fond of. But in my mind as a child, X series 'replaced' Classic in what they focused on, so I've never touched it. I lack the same problem with Zero series, even, which replaced X.

i missed out on a lot of 90s TV because mom thought it was bad, and since i was a good little puppet i tended to agree, if only because dad watched it it MUST have been bad!

years later i collected the whole x-files series.

Abandoning older video games because they're not 'pretty' enough' and I can't get into them. Apparently there was a time when blocky pixels running around a screen didn't bother me, but I've been spoiled by shinier things and that time is past.

Sigh. It's such a stupid reason not to play games you're actually interested in.

I avoided Glee for months because my friends were so obsessed with it.

(Now, of course, after the train wreck the last season was I should have kept avoiding it xD)

The Amazing Spiderman, because I don't think the new Peter is nerdy enough to be the outcast that makes half of Spiderman's significance. I mean, if Peter was popular and had lots of good friends he wouldn't have the teenage confusion and loneliness that makes his character so endearing. Spiderman is the nerdy comic guys' personal dream, y'know?

Never watched the 11th Doctor or seasons 2 and 3 of Torchwood because a crazy ex rubbed his shit all over the Whoniverse, and I can't watch it without being reminded of him now. Same with a few other huge fandoms. HE DICKS UP ALL THE SCIFI.

I really think I could have enjoyed early Supernatural, especially since I like road trips and diners and brofests and ridiculous exorcism traps and crap, plus classic rock never hurt anything. But a toxic ex-friend became a gigantic stan for it, and once I found out about that, ahahahahaha NO.

I've been refusing to watch Rahxelphon for ages because a guy I liked (whom I don't even speak to anymore) refused to try stuff I liked even though I kept trying his stuff, and he wanted me to watch that show.

What's dumb is, I know I'd probably like it, but I just associate the show with that ex-friend and blargh

I'm actually almost over it, though, so I'll probably sit down and watch it whenever I get through some other shows.

I avoided Spartacus because the main actor died between season 1 and 3. Don't ask me why but for some reason I can't watch it. Seriously, it's ridiuclous. I'Ve watched a lot of movies with dead actors but for some reason this one I can't.

Maybe one day I'll get over that weird feeling and actually watch the Show o.O

I'm avoiding Mad Men [for now] out of sheer laziness and obstinance. I watch literally EVERY OTHER SHOW, OKAY, get off my back already.

but I may cave.

I adamantly avoided the UK version of The Office because this person who was in another of my fandoms kept going on and on about how much better it was than the US version of The Office and how every aspect of the US sucked donkey balls because it had sitcom-y jokes and literally, sincerely used the exact phrase "everything British is better." And SHE was British, not some try-hard anglophile.

Also, most of her praises were over how much colder and bleaker the UK version was, which she said made it automatically better. So yeah, maybe the UK version is better, but fuck YOU, you act like that and especially pull a phrase like that and it's gonna take a lot for me to ever bother checking out that show.

Petty yes, but I don't really personally care for much british comedy, so I don't feel like I'm missing out.

I'd avoided The Vampire Diaries because of 1) the horrible marketing (poorly photoshopped images of half-naked people smeared with oil really don't do it for me tbh) and 2) no vampire show will ever be as awesome as BtVS (for me, at least. obviously YMMV and that's okay) and 3) a lot of my flist talked about the mansplaining, woobification, and rape-apology that went on in certain sections of the fandom and it was something I really wanted to avoid.

The truth is I love the show. It's absolutely fantastic and Nina Dobrev is the queen of my heart. I avoid the mansplainers, woobifiers, and rape-apologists and just make graphics, read/write fics and have an all around awesome time.

Because dear god was that a whirlwind of popularity and I don't want anything to do with popular fandoms.

Homestuck, because my best friend hates it and I knew she'd mock the hell out of me (she's not really that great a friend). So now I just enjoy it in secret :/

I avoid all fandoms that show up in fs secrets unless

1) I've already read/watched/played/listend to/etc. it

2) I read/watch/play/listen to/etc. it for social reasons with my meatspace friends

LOL I'm doing this wrong aren't I?

Harry Potter up until my last year of high school.

I was an Animorphs fan when Harry Potter came out. I was jealous and bitter that it was taking the spotlight away from my favorite book series. That and I HATED the way JKR wrote. I read part of the first chapter of book one, cause my crush at the time (i was 12) tried to get me into it. But I couldn't stand it.

So, here comes the year book six came out and I finally gave up. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF MY. FRIENDS was talking AAAAAALLLLLLL about book six. And I felt left out. So I borrowed the first book from a friend and then, for the next week, I devoured the entirety of the series up to that point. I was glued to my bed for the entire weekend or I had my book out in class when I was done with classwork.

Needless to say, I was baffled by my younger!self as to why I gave up on it so fast back then, but, we're not all rational at 12. :P

Not quite a series/fandom, but I stopped roleplaying for a while thanks to the dual pincer attack of a douchebag creepy GM and one of my best rp partners turning out to believe that she was her character and therefore I was my character and ugh.

I'm back into it now and love it more than ever, but god I never wanted to write again back then.

The previews I saw for it looked like stupid, fratboy antics and rubbed me all the wrong ways. Of course when I finally caught an episode I was shrieking at the injustice of such a stupid promo making me almost miss out.

I used to avoid AU stories like the plague just because I thought it was weird and bizarre to take the same characters and plop them into a different setting. Yeah. Flash forward to me reading etothepii's Addams family AUs. . .now it's kind of one of my favorite genres.

I also skipped over 30 Rock because EVERYONE talked about it and I thought it sounded weird, so I never watched it. Yeah, flash forward to me catching it on TV in the work breakroom one day, "This is fucking hilarious!" I won't watch it now though on netflix or something because there's too many episodes and I won't catch up ever.

*cough* I have a lot of things I just won't watch because they have too many episodes/are too long. Unless I'm watching something with someone else or I'm in a movie theater I can't really focus on a film for more than an hour and a half, and if I don't find the show either REALLY compelling or easy and short to watch I don't watch it.
