Is this depression?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-08 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really want anything in life. I'm currently killing myself working towards a childhood dream but I haven't actually had passion for it in a very long time. It's like I use the goal as a way to distract myself from how bland everything is. I'm worried that once I accomplish what I'm working for I'll just have a complete breakdown because there will be nothing left. I also suspect some of the difficulties I've had I've just been sabotaging myself to delay the disappointment.

I don't even have a wildest dream. If I discovered I had magical powers tomorrow or found a genie there's really nothing I want. At all.

Is this depression? I don't feel like I think depressed people would but I don't really know how to explain my lack of interest in anything. Sometimes to muster up enthusiasm for something I have to pretend I'm playing a person who cares about things in a movie or something.

I'm far from an expert, but as far as I know, yeah, extreme apathy of this sort is a sign of depression.

Depression doesn't manifest itself the same way all the time, there are many types and forms of it.

It could be. I feel very much the same way as you do and I was diagnosed with depression and have been seeing a therapist for the past few years. Depression is shown in media as crying all of the time and wanting to kill yourself, but it isn't always like that. Feeling no hope and no passion can also be depression. Talking to your doctor about it could help you find ways to deal with this. The most important thing to remember is that even though working towards this goal is painful (something I understand all too well), letting go without having another plan to fall back on will cause you to spiral down even deeper, so please keep going :) If you want someone to talk to, I'm open.

That sounds very like depression, anon. You should bring it up to a doctor or look into a therapist if you have insurance. I know I realized I needed help somewhere between not having anything to look forward to and having borderline panic attacks whenever plans I made fell through.

I'm worried this is something I will outgrow and being diagnosed with depression could permanently ruin my life.

How long have you felt this way? Did this start this week, or has it been happening, even intermittently, for months/years?

Really, it comes down to whether your feelings of apathy are getting in the way of doing things you enjoy- and if you can't think of things you enjoy, then, while that could be a clincher, it could also mean you need to makes some major life changes.

Thanks for this. I guess I have some things to think about.

A diagnosis isn't a blinking neon sign for the whole world to see. It's a doorway to treatment. If there is a problem, and it sounds like there might be, the best thing you can do is seek help for it. No one but your doctor has to know. You don't have to take out ad space to tell the world you're depressed. All you have to do is help yourself feel better.

Are you me? Well, except for the whole goal thing.

I've got to wonder if it's not just a side effect of life. Generally, life is one disappointment after another. Better to be apathetic than feel sad when things inevitably go to shit.
