Original Characters you love but know people will scream Mary Sue at?

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2012-08-08 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I've had this OC I've wanted to use in fanfic for forever. I finally have an fic idea I know she'd be perfect for, but I know she's immediately going to be thrown into the MS category, not that I'm going to let that stop me because I just love the idea I've gotten. I'm just bracing myself for "Eww what a Mary Sue (character) is!" if I get reviews at all.

Does anyone else have OCs they are fond of, and really want to use despite the dreaded Mary Sue label?

I love well-written OCs, especially when they provide outsider POV on the canonical characters. I think if they're done right, they're a breath of fresh air, epsecially if you've just been mainlining days and days of fic with the same four characters in them. One of my favorite OCs is from [personal profile] sholio's "Old Soldiers Die Hard," an SGA fic. That OC has stuck with me for years after I read the fic.

I share your missery xD I have an OC which I dearly love and have build up in detail but I'm a bit afraid what people will think of him in FanFic. Especially since he's together with a canon character, just a minor one, mind you but still.

Ah well, we'll see^^

I worry a bit the OC has just been so much fun to work with, even still in the planing stages,(this is looking like a kinda long fic.) I've just got this over all feeling of "Haters to the left! I'm writing this, and posting it."

I like OCs when they're well-written and well-integrated into the story/setting, actually.

Same. Creating OCs and cramming them into your fanfics is just a recipe for a disaster. If the plot calls for an OC, I'll add an OC. It seems to stupid to make up OCs and then hope you can find a use for them at some point.

I've done it a few times. Really, what's to stop you? The worst that anyone will do to you is hit the back button, and you'll get a lot out of writing it, and you've a high chance of converting a few OC-hating doubters while you're at it.

I've seen people do a lot worse than just push the back button to other authors over dumb things like that, but I'm definitely not letting it stop me. I've pretty much gotten myself to the "screw what everyone else wants I'm writing what I want, and posting it." mentality but doesn't stop the nervousness every time I get an email telling me someone's left a review for a fic.

See, that's your problem. You are creating a character independent of fic. What are you doing? Using character sheets? Writing up a background story?

Characters -- whether they're an OC or canon character -- exist in fic to advance the plot. When you create a character without the plot in mind, you are floundering without a direction. It is a sign of a poor writer, and it makes me think either a) your OC unnecessary or b) you don't know how to tell a story.

You make a lot of assumptions, Anon.

The OC does advance the plot, that's why I want to use her rather than create a carbon copy OC just for that fic. The fic revolves around canon characters, but the OC does things that need to be done, and no canon characters fit into the role I needed.

Okay, fair enough. She advances the plot. What I don't understand is why you would feel the need to "create" her (and create is loaded word since I don't really consider a character created until they are actually involved in a narrative) prior to knowing what you needed to use her for. That seems pointless and stupid to me unless I'm misreading you.

there are many ways to create characters and narratives. A narrative can be character-driven, in which case a character can exist before a plot does, or the narrative drives the characters.

Also don't be silly, plenty of people create original and fancharacters without having a story for them and they're perfectly good characters. It's for fun dude.

I do this all time, mostly because I really like to draw, and I'm a bit less bad at original characters than fanart. Most of the time they just stay drawings, but some of them like the OC I'm talking about get names, and develop personalities. When I came up with the plot line in the fic, and none of the canon characters would work I realized OC would be perfect for it.

Well you're just going to have to go on thinking it's pointless and stupid because out minds work in very different ways.

Eh, a friend and I once had an OFC who was a Sue. We had fun writing our stories of her and posting them. Why? Because fanfic is fun.
