I have some similar problems - I only went to college because everyone else wanted me to, picked a major that was fascinating but useless, and have only had low-end work since then. A combination of the recession and the US immigration system bit several years out of my working life, and I often feel like I'm still plagued by the inertia of that time. I love working, but I've no great thirst to go earn a lot of money or anything; I just get satisfied with being good at what I do, however little it pays. I'm 27 and I've only had four jobs, two of which only lasted a few months. And I'm out of work right now and while I am trying to change that fact, I certainly could be trying harder than I am; my household is solvent and I have things to write, etc.

Can I recommend http://coursera.org ? They offer free online university courses in a huge variety of things. You could study coding or art some more, or try something new that interests you. I'm doing the Intro to Finance course and it's interesting, if kinda on the easy side (as intro courses tend to be), and it makes me feel like I'm not wasting my summer, and I hope it will help me in the future.

Not OP, I'm a bit interested in this. I have a few questions about it though:

- Do you have to be a US citizen to sign up for that?
- What if you've never been to a university?*
- Do you have any tips/info/advice on what to do or not do after you've signed up?
- What kind of format of communication are they using to talk to the students? (Video? Online chat system?)
- Do I have to write essay-long tests?

* = I never finished high school (due to problems with depression as well) but I have done some classes at community college. I did fairly well in my English.

I'm interested in these (https://www.coursera.org/course/design) two (https://www.coursera.org/course/thinkagain) courses at the moment, but I am a bit scared that I'll be to dumb to participate. :(

heh, I was a bit nervous too because I'd not done any formal school stuff in five years. There's several participating universities and I'm sure they're all different - the course I'm doing is from the University of Michigan - but the one I'm doing (Intro to Finance) started from the basics and eased up gently. As it's an intro course I guess I should have expected that. I think it's partly intended for people who haven't been to university - the teacher said that he hoped there'd be people as young as 15 in the class!

I'm not a US citizen myself (I'm an immigrant), and I don't think you need to be a US resident either; all they ask when you sign up is your name and email. (I put my initials in rather than my full name, out of internets habit, and I sliiightly regret that as now my name won't be on the certificate I'll get for the course, but as it's not a formal qualification anyway I don't really care. YMMV).

I think types of teaching material vary; the course I'm taking has a little over two hours of video lectures per week, and a free textbook that I've skimmed a bit but not yet had to refer to much (I should really study it more...). There's also a discussion forum where teaching assistants for the class can help out students; I've not used it yet myself but I know they're taking it seriously, as there have been a few emails sent out in response to requests made by students in the forum. (They also sent out an email reminder notice when the course started).

To keep costs down all the assignments on the course I'm taking are designed to be automatically graded - so it's a mix of multiple-choice questions and numerical questions (as it's a math-related class). I'm guessing that long essay tests would be too time-consuming to grade for a free course, so I doubt any course would rely on them.

Tips: well, my big problem has been not leaving study/assignments until the last minute before the deadline. :/ I'm trying to pace myself through the week, and study for about an hour every day. I've been watching the videos with a text file open so I can type my own notes as I go; that's helped me out a lot. ALSO THIS IS THE DUMBEST THING but at first I didn't realise I could just download the videos rather than streaming them - I'm doing a LOT better now I can just play them straight off my hard-drive rather than over my dodgy DSL connection. /fails always

Those courses you linked look really interesting... I don't know anything about design but the second one reminds me a bit of the intro to formal logic class I did in my first semester of university; it's a really useful way of thinking though it can get a bit dry. It really can't hurt to sign up for them, can it? If something else comes up and you have to drop it, you won't have lost anything. (Ngl, I think I'm glad I only signed up for one thing at once because otherwise my procrastinatory habits would kill me, but those two seem to only overlap for three weeks, and you could always see how well you're doing with the design course and then sign up for the logic course if you think it's going good. I don't think there's a limit on class sizes or a deadline for signing up, so as long as you get in there before the course starts it should be fine).
