In a Draco/Hermione fic (I know, I know) set after Voldemort's downfall, I did kill off Ron, but it was a heroic death in the Final Battle and at the time (before HBP) I did think JKR would kill Ron in the last book because of the wizard chess sacrifice in Sorceror's Stone. There was that whole 7 moves = 7 years/books theory- does anyone remember that? I thought that person had figured out the whole thing, that the chess game would be a metaphor for the arc of the series! Then by Half Blood Prince it became really obvious that JKR just made stuff up as she went along and no she didn't plan everything to correspond to one scene in her first book.

I have never understood how killing off a character in a heroic way is anything remotely similar to killing them off nastily. A heroic death is one of the biggest compliments you can give a character. It's part of the reason people in sci-fi/fantasy/superhero stories die and come back so much — because heroic deaths are so amazing that everyone wants to do them to their favorite characters, there's just that little problem of not being able to use the character again if you keep them dead.

And yes, I totally thought Ron was going to sacrifice himself for Harry in book 7 too ;) Not because of the chess metaphor though. And I thought Hermione might sacrifice herself too, but I was less sure of that. However, I was so sure Hermione was going to almost die or have to deal with death in some way, because the way she flipped out about the veil in the Department of Mysteries made me think would obviously factor into her later character development. *sigh* the Department of Mysteries section at the end of OotP may have been my single favorite part of the entire series and I'm still a little pouty that it all came to nothing.

WOW that was a massive tangent...

Fun fact: JKR DID originally plan to kill off Ron, but decided not to in the end.
