OP

Yeah what the people above me said.

It's basically a serious, committed, consensual (as far as I can tell vov), monogamous hate-sex relationship where the two persons (trolls) involved hate each other so passionately that it's romantic, and they keep this delicate balance between hurting each other (emotionally, physically, verbally, psychologically, anything goes) but not killing or going too far. Like, if you crossed the line, the hate would stop being romantic and become platonic and then the other troll might kill you for real because they don't care about you anymore.

It's a very violent society, so even actual relationships can be shattered ridiculously easily, and you need to work hard to get and maintain allies of any kind, even your lovers.

And because of the tyrannical empire the trolls live in, they have to reproduce or die, so they NEED to find someone to be their hatesex buddy and then another one to be their more "normal" lover (the closest thing they have to the concept of human romance), for reproduction purposes, and then a BFF of sorts that keeps them from doing stupid stuff out of anger that might get them killed and whom they protect in return (there seems to be a more aggressive and a more passive partner in this "quadrant"), and then either find or be themselves a mediator to other trolls who are hateflirting on accident with someone other than their hatesex buddy.

The first two are vital because they're sexual and they need to present their genetic material to the empire when they come to collect it and if they don't comply they are killed for it.

If it sounds convoluted, that's because it was written that way on purpose by the author who loves to troll his audience.

Also note that their flushed (<3) quadrant isn't really love, so much as it is /pity/.

ayrt

I initially had that in the explanation, but I realized that made it even more complicated so I took it out.

But yeah, because being strong, powerful and clever are important traits to survive, actual "love-love" isn't accepted, but "gosh, you would die without me, how pathetic, I guess I'll have to protect you, you dimwit <3" is accepted.

KIND OF SPOILERS

However, the way the troll civilization is as we know it right now is artificial, and was molded into that warrior-savagery form on purpose through the centuries by external forces, so you can see that, despite all that aggression and mistrust being the norm, the trolls we are familiar with (who aren't adults yet and are still struggling to find their place in life) show that they can care for real and have genuine affection for some people.

It makes one wonder how much of the whole pity/hate thing is actually intrinsic to their species and how much was just accepted as "the way things are, so might as well do it and not get horribly killed".

I remember this being mentioned somewhere (maybe the wiki), but the whole kismessitude (spelling?) (the hatesex quadrant) has never ended up well for anyone, and it is very possible that it, along with the whole quadrant thing, was introduced as a method of population control, because, honestly? The external forces I mentioned have introduced even more and more terrible measures that appear to be just for control and to keep everyone from uprising against the Empire.
