Lead character in a vanity published YA book tumblr and ONTD have been blowing up about lately. Save the Pearls. It's... spectacularly bad. Full of facepalming racism and bonus furries. I couldn't make it through most of the youtube videos for secondhand embarrassment. Bad acting, racism everywhere, and stupid ass dialogue.

And if you want to read it I am going to advocate piracy in this case.

that it's titled "save the pearls" is delicious to me, no clue why

Thank you for the mediafire. I'm dying to know how horrible it is but there is no way in hell I'd buy it.

Lemme know if you actually make it all the way through. I tried but I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. It is physically hard to read.

The character's Eden, and she's the lead character of a series called Save the Pearls.

tl;dr, white people are pushed to extinction because of some disease and are now oppressed by black people, and it's all written in stereotypes and other racist crap. Eden's trying to be a "Coal" so she can be more desirable (because darker skinned people are more desirable than lighter skinned people), hence the blackface on the left and her regular look on the right.

It gets worse. I will leave it at that.

Wow, Paul Kinsey had that idea for a Star Trek episode in Mad Men XDDD

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen Mad Men, but there was a Star Trek episode where this one group had faces that were black on the left and white on the right and another group had faces that were white on the left and black on the right and they hated each other and fought to extinction.

I don't remember it being particularly good, but I bet it's better than this book.

Also, Frank Gorshin was nominated for an Emmy for his role in this the same year he was nominated for playing the Riddler, just sayin'.

It (the ST:TOS episode) was *spectacularly* good...the looks on the faces of the crew gathered around the conference room table after the reveal was something that stays with me, to this day. And I saw the series in second-run syndication. The end of the episode is gut-wrenching.

That, and Balance of Terror are two of the best ST:TOS episodes to address the issue of racism, IMO. (I can't stand the remastered eps, though; way to stomp all over my childhood, people!)
