I refuse to believe the author isn't a troll. Every time she comes to the defense of this mind-fucking fail of a book she uses every cliched "but I'm not a racist!" defense known to humankind.

Okay, so are people offended by the concept, or is it just presented very poorly?


Because Ursula Le Guin did something in her sci-fi series where the lighter-skinned people were slaves and the darker-skinned people were in power, but nobody had a problem with that, if I remember correctly.

Ah man, I really hoped someone wouldn't send in a secret for this shit novel. The last thing it deserves is attention. Because the more attention it gets, the more likely some people will read the book out of ~curiosity~. Meaning this woman will be making a profit out of it, whether you hate what she writes or not.

This book just needs to crawl into a hole and die, then be forgotten about. Like a big dump.

This is the least of the problems, but whenever I see that picture, it drives me nuts how uneven the line between the two halves of her face is. Why does it suddenly curve when it hits her forehead? And why is her hair parted to the side, messing up the line?

I know it's pretty insignificant in the whole scheme of things, but it still annoys me.

It's as if there's a race for the most offensive and most badly written novel this century. Foyt saw Twilight and 50 Shades and thought, "Hmm, needs more racism."

Metaphors Matter

A lot of good writing happens between the lines. In the metaphors, the imagery, the word choices... In the English language, the first thing we think of for pearls is "luxury, morality, purity" and for coal "dirty, worthless, immoral". Fancy justification of the worthlessness of pearls aside, if every line in your book DEMONSTRATES the value of a perl, and how morally corrupt "coals" are... you're missing the point of your own clever value-inversion. U_U

It's hard not to go at this book with an editing-pen.

For anyone interested, 'Noughts and Crosses' by Malorie Blackman is a far superior take on the racist dystopia genre.

It was pretty much required reading for British kids of a certain age, back in the day - it deals with race quite cleverly and sensiitively, and is actually a really good read.

NTS, really must remember it's stupid bland boring title so I can recommend against it and avoid accidentally buying it.

Setting aside all the grossness of it, I totally agree.

I think maybe it's more to do with the fact that I personally just like dark eyes/hair better than blue/blonde than it has to do with her skin colour (I frequently find blonde people more attractive when they dye their hair dark, or dark haired people less attractive when they dye their hair blonde), but I still feel kind of weird about it.
