I think OC's can be really great in a pairing. . .if the story is not only about that pairing.

For example, I read a hilarious story that was about how bizarre it was to date John Watson. It's one of the funniest things I've ever read, it was hardly romantic at all, and it was narrated by an OC. Passing it by just because it was OC/John Watson would have meant that I really missed out.

You're free to not like it though, I suppose, but I really don't understand why you're so enraged. I've spoken before about fandom entitlement, and this is a prime example of it. People will make what they make. Sifting through things is not that hard. And if you don't like what's out there, then write what you do like.

People shouldn't make misleading tags, but it's really not that hard to sift for a little while for something good.

This. I've read a few series set in the Firefly world featuring OC's in relationships with main characters, but they've not been about those pairings, but the group as a whole. Hell, I've written an OC for Firefly and I love her dearly. She's not in any romantic relationship with any of the characters but it was fun to write her with the premise of "here's how a continuation of Firefly might have been."

Misleading tags & summaries is one thing. Hating authors because they're having fun? CTFO.

I pretty much agree with this. I have one fic that involves an OC/canon character romance . . . that happened 12 years ago in the timeline of the fic (and before the events of the canon). It's mostly just there to drive part of the plot. And yet, simply because there's an OC/CC relationship mentioned, it has one of my lowest hit counts for that fandom. :-(
