Fucking AMEN.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hate to admit it, but I feel the same way, too. For a while I blacklisted reading an author's work because of their OCs getting involved with canon characters.

Glad I'm not a frequent visitor to that person's blog and/or their friend, negl.

I don't like canon character/OC either so I just don't read it. Whatever floats your boat applies I suppose as well as don't like, don't read - but if people are mislabelling stuff and you click on it not realising it is an OC/canon character story then yeah, that's annoying.

Warm

You were okay with just the first two paragraphs. You seemed sincerely irritated. But then your 'strong' opinion turned into a stupid opinion and it got a little obvious that you were just looking to start shit.

Still, I like this secret for its discussion potential.

Agreed, even though this secret smells strongly of troll. IDGAF.

I'm definitely hesitant about OCs, and will admit if it's in a pairing I'll more likely than not skip over it.

Way back in the seaQuest days I read this fic that was like 90% OCs and it was AWESOME. I actually re-read it now and then because I just love all the OCs so much.

So yeah, I admit I skip over a lot of OC fic but also admit there are some really great OCs floating around out there.

A-fucking-men, OP. Goddamn.

OC's are fine and sometimes necessary for the most part. But quit pairing them up with canon characters! It's just annoying and seems self-insertish. :/

OP, why do you suggest that people who write OCs should try writing original fiction, as though we've never done so before? I came to fandom after writing nothing but original stories. I enjoy both.

So I'm not sure where your assumption is coming from, exactly. Can you explain that one to me?

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-08-09 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think OC's can be really great in a pairing. . .if the story is not only about that pairing.

For example, I read a hilarious story that was about how bizarre it was to date John Watson. It's one of the funniest things I've ever read, it was hardly romantic at all, and it was narrated by an OC. Passing it by just because it was OC/John Watson would have meant that I really missed out.

You're free to not like it though, I suppose, but I really don't understand why you're so enraged. I've spoken before about fandom entitlement, and this is a prime example of it. People will make what they make. Sifting through things is not that hard. And if you don't like what's out there, then write what you do like.

People shouldn't make misleading tags, but it's really not that hard to sift for a little while for something good.

What if the role I use an OC to fill that a canon character cannot is "someone who is not a complete douchebag like most of the people in this series" or "someone who is not related to this character with whom they can have a non-incesty relationship"? Relationships can make for good stories, and if you want to write about how character A would be in a relationship and there aren't canon characters to pair him/her with, more power to you. There was a lot of great OC relationship fic in the early seasons of Supernatural because the only recurring cast was two brothers and not everyone wants to write incest. It happens.

[personal profile] stainless 2012-08-09 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Also: There are a lot of horrible OCs out there, no question. But I really like well-done stories about regular people who are part of epic worlds or around superhuman characters, if done well.

I mean, like (picking random big fandom), what it's like to live a few doors down from Nick Fury or something.

Or what the life of Loki's hairdresser is like.

Or if the story is some epic battle between larger-than-life kings, what Joseph the random peasant thinks of it all and how he copes.

That kind of thing.

Those kinds of stories you really can't tell without creating a character (well, I guess you could reassign those things to an existing obscure character, but you're still mainly creating, I'd say.)

Same, minus the fury.

I also feel this way about OC babies and family. It's like someone is trying to mash up what they think are the best traits of their favourite pairing or character, and create a SUPER combo/extension everyone will totally love for certain amirite. Even the adopted ones. It gets very Renesmee-feeling, cgi baby/face included.

I see nothing wrong with being bitter because people are so desperate to try to snare somebody into reading their fics that they mislabel them, but you can fuck off about making it about the people who genuinely do like the challenge of creating an OC and do it despite knowing that it won't get them a lot of readers.
Oh noez, people think you have a "strong opinion" because you can't keep yourself from generalizing.

I'm not totally opposed to the idea of CCxOC but I've yet to see it done well. :/

But I usually only like OC's in "see the fictional world from the eyes of someone else" type stories where the focus isn't on the canon characters at all.

That"s pretty much how I try to use OC's - to flesh out the world, or to do plot points in stories I couldn't with another character.
dazzledfirestar: (Default)

[personal profile] dazzledfirestar 2012-08-10 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Well, obviously you like what you like and there's nothing wrong with that. And obviously people shouldn't mistag their stuff just to try to bait and switch readers, that's bullshit right there.

But I don't get why you are so obviously angry about people doing what they like to do. Fandom is for having fun and if these writers want to create characters for whatever reason at all and they're having fun, it's not a personal attack on you.

Also, I'd be curious about your feelings on the insertion of semi-canon character (ex. the cellist from the Avengers movie). He/she is mentioned, is canonically in a relationship with a canon character, but we know NOTHING about them. Does that qualify for you as an OC/canon pairing that will make you tear your hair out?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I read fanfiction, because I want to read about characters that I know and love, not because I want read someone's wet dreams with a bland, overpowered, non-sensical self insert character. Especially if said self insert is just like the canon character(s) that's mia, but blander and more powerful.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
One of my favourite Inception fics is CCxOC.

Anyway I don't know why you felt the need to make this a secret: it's a pretty popular opinion, as you can see.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda worry about this for my own stuff. I mean, the pairing that I'm writing isn't particularly with an OC. The character is mentioned in canon as a love interest of the other person, and that he loved her dearly. Thing is, she's only really mentioned every once in a while and nothing is ever really expanded on her character; such as what she was like, etc. So, even though she's technically canon, I guess she would still be considered an OC because any personality or details I write about her is really me making it up instead of taking it from canon except her name, because the canon gives me nothing else.

Then again, it's for an incredibly small fandom anyway so no1curr.

there aren't a lot of CC/OC fics in any of my recent fandoms, but OCs that end up taking over the story and becoming one of the leads in a fic that is primarily advertised as CC/CC will always bug me.

it doesn't matter if OC is trying to help CC/CC get together or teach them life lessons with its superior wisdom or w/e. in fact, it only makes it worse.
