Also: There are a lot of horrible OCs out there, no question. But I really like well-done stories about regular people who are part of epic worlds or around superhuman characters, if done well.

I mean, like (picking random big fandom), what it's like to live a few doors down from Nick Fury or something.

Or what the life of Loki's hairdresser is like.

Or if the story is some epic battle between larger-than-life kings, what Joseph the random peasant thinks of it all and how he copes.

That kind of thing.

Those kinds of stories you really can't tell without creating a character (well, I guess you could reassign those things to an existing obscure character, but you're still mainly creating, I'd say.)

Well, see, now all of those things ( and the John Watson one mentioned above) sound interesting - but I note that none are "pairings"

Few doors Down isn't doing Nick Fury. Loki isn't proposing on the Ferris wheel at coney island. Joseph the Peasant isn't the Lonely Queen's One Troo Wub with the Magical Dowsing Stick.

Pairings are difficult. I don't think I'd ever write Canon Character/OC, personally.

I won't say never, but it's not anything I've ever been interested in doing.

I think it would be too easy to write "who I think would be perfect for this character" rather than really having a plot.

But I won't say it can never be done. Or that I'd never find myself trying. (Every time I say never, I end up doing the thing I said I'd never do. It's dangerous to say never.)

Heh, same here.

(It's sometimes fun to tackle some dreaded/hated trope or genre and see if you can actually make it work.)

I've written about OCs who are the exes of canon characters...that's always fun XD

I think that's the issue. Like with romance fics, for OC fics for every one great one there are about four shit ones. Hence why some people get narked about romance to.

Those four shit fics are "who I think would be perfect for this character-oh me!" more often than not, while the really decent OC fic gets lost in the spam of the crap ones (see the first few pages of Transformers new fic on ff.net) and because there's not really a centralized place to post aside from gen comms-which can be very quiet too- that one great fic gets barely any traffic.

What I'd love to see is a multifandom OC comm, with moderators who can see the difference between blatant self inserts and Mary Sues and pull the spam stuff.

YES YES YES YES YES to all this.

I love fics that are like ST:TNG's episode "The Lower Decks" where it shows what it's like for the junior officers to interact with the bridge crew. Those characters are just there for the one episode.

My version of a redshirt's diary, for my fandom:

So much fun to write.

Cool!

That is fine to me. My husband and his brother have a whole thing they've set up in the Star Trek world about their OC's, who occasionally come in contact with the regular characters, but are never hooking up with them. Which is always what bothers me. I don't want to read about your beautiful amazing Mary Sue who manages to get Captain America out of his post-Capsicle depression with the amazingness of her personality, right? But reading about the life of Loki's hairdresser would be interesting unless her motivation is to get in Loki's pants with the amazingness of her haircutting skills.
