I kinda worry about this for my own stuff. I mean, the pairing that I'm writing isn't particularly with an OC. The character is mentioned in canon as a love interest of the other person, and that he loved her dearly. Thing is, she's only really mentioned every once in a while and nothing is ever really expanded on her character; such as what she was like, etc. So, even though she's technically canon, I guess she would still be considered an OC because any personality or details I write about her is really me making it up instead of taking it from canon except her name, because the canon gives me nothing else.

Then again, it's for an incredibly small fandom anyway so no1curr.

I've seen fics like that become popular if the characterisation is done well. There was one in Final Fantasy IV fandom recently that really took off - it was an AU about the girlfriend of one of the main characters; she gets fridged very early on in canon so is never expanded on at all, but in the fic she survives and remains part of the story the whole way through. It's here, if you want to get a look at the comments and see how readers responded to it.
