roommate searching tips?

I've got meetings with three potential roommates this weekend. Any tips?

(it's a flat share, so everyone has their own room, what's the proper word for that?)

1. Go with your gut. If the person feels off, most likely she/he is off
2. Try to go with people who are single. Otherwise you might have a fourth, usually unpaying roommate (girlfriends/boyfriends) in a few weeks. (Had this one happen to me. Girlfriend of roommate started spending the nights over. Then nights led to days. And then she basically moved in without paying for anything. What a freakin' headache that one was.)

See if you can do it over a meal at a public restaurant/coffee shop. People's table manners and the way they treat the waitstaff are an excellent indication of their personality. Also it allows you to sit down and have small talk instead of logistics talk (which is important, but not quite so important as "will I hate them")

Ask if they're willing to commit to your standard of cleanliness in communal areas, maybe on a rota basis. Make sure they tell you honestly about their drug habits (including alcohol and smoking) and know of yours in return, so everyone's on the same page and you can come up with a household drug/smoking policy.

(I've always heard 'flatmates', but I'm British, so.)
