Try getting it cut at a salon in a black neighborhood. My hair is quite similar, although I would call it wavy (it was curly before puberty), and when it was on the long side, I found I got some of the best results from salons that work with very thick hair on a daily basis. And don't be afraid to speak your mind to the stylist, and tell them to don't hold back with the thinning shears. I have had success wearing it very short, however. My features read as my age- I'm also 23- or older.
