I Have Hermione Hair

(Anonymous) 2012-08-09 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have extremely thick hair that sits in poofs around my head, and would frizz very much if I didn't use a tiny bit of product after washing it. That's all I'm willing to do -- despite only washing it twice a week, it damages if you breathe on it. So I don't use curling irons or flat irons.

It's not wavy or curly but it's not straight either. It's just bushy and poofy.

My problem is that I can't find a haircut that works. I'm very petite and skinny with an oval face. My whole life I've wanted a Louise Brooks Bob, but it's can't possibly be achieved without a lot of product and daily styling, and I'm neither patient enough to style and nor will my hair cooperate.

I tried very short -- within two months it was a nightmare of foof going every which way, not to mention it took five years off my face and any tiny bit of sexiness I had. (I'm twenty-three. Being treated like a teenager? Not fun. Random strangers think they can lecture you when you accidentally knock a hanger to the ground at goodwill and don't immediately pick it up. Actual fifteen-year-olds on the bus sass you.) I went super super long when I was in my early teens and when I see videos of myself back then it's incredibly gross. It's like I'm wearing a hairy cape. Right now I do long layered bobs but my last one was a mess -- the guy who cut it didn't take nearly enough bulk out from the crown and it's rapidly becoming too heavy to wear up because it pulls on my hairline (and since he was so kind as to chop in so many layers at the bottom, it won't braid without falling apart immediately).

Any advice? It's a hot summer and I really need to cut it again but I don't even know what to ask for anymore.

Why not get it permed straight? Done right it should hold for months, no product needed. In the long run it might save you money

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I've had a stylist suggest this to me before, but I have a few misgivings (it really needs research)...for one thing, my hair grows really fast and the roots would just come in puffy, wouldn't they? Also, I'm not sure which treatment is safe. (When they first came out I heard they used formaldehyde? D:)

Then there's the fact that I have anxiety attacks and I couldn't sit at the stylists office for four hours (if that is how long they take.) Then there's the fact that I would have to find someone who I trust will do it right (I live in a huge urban city with bajillions of stylists and who knows which one is the good one? I haven't found my perfect stylist yet -- been trying a different one each time).

And finally and most importantly...it's expensive and I want to save my extra money for fannish things!!! XD It's like..."hmmm, $100 dollars on my hair...or $200 dollars worth of books/toys/DVDs. WELP, NO CONTEST."

I have been getting my hair straightened since I was 9, well at first only the fringe, so I have experience with this.
There are both products with formaldehyde and without, I did the one with it once and it wasn't worth it the risk, since it didn't look much better than the one without.

Four hours sounds about right (actually it has taken longer sometimes, if the place is full), I'm shy and I hate the kind of talks people tend to have at the hairdresser's so I bring a book, I dunno if that would work for you but it helps tuning the other customers out.

And yup, expensive, nothing to say there :(

There are also Keratine shocks (err I guess they are called like that? English is not my first language so I'm trying hard to make this understandable xD) that help a lot to "repair" the hair, and may be a cheaper option. Cons, the first time you wash after the treatment is awful, or at least it was for me, the hair was kind of matted and it took me a long time to fully wash it and de tangle that mess (but don't worry, by the next wash it was great!)

Oh, and regarding which place to go, I live in a big city also and I looked it up on the Internet. Most hairdressers would offer this, but is preferable to go only to the ones that advertise this in particular, like they are known for this.

Sorry for the testament ;) and my condolences for the Hermione hair, I freaking hate mine u.u

I did not have a great experience with the keratin thing. I got one done at Aveda, and to me, it had no effect whatsoever on my hair. This may be because I refuse to blowdry/flatiron it, though.

Have you tried asking them to thin it out? When I leave it natural I have Hermione hair too but if you ask them to thin it out with a thin razor it will take bulk out like whoa.

It's a standard part of my request every time I get a cut, but I'm starting to think that stylists are afraid to cut as much as they really need to, because it's so much hair and maybe they think I'll freak out if I think they've taken off too much.

As someone who has the same problem, my advice is too keep on searching for the right stylist. It is all about layers but you would be surprised how easily is to screw them up. I had to go through half a dozen stylists, most butchered my hair with layers before I found one who knew what she was doing.

Re: I Have Hermione Hair

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I'm hoping for! :D I had a really decent stylist but she moved away and ever since I've been adrift, ignoring my grandmother who says "just use my girl up the block. She does a good haircut and it only costs nine dollar! What do you mean, forty dollars on a haircut?" (said girl once gave me The Farrah -- which I did not ask for -- and only on one side of my head.) There are a lot of amazing stylists in this city but most of them charge $100 plus for a haircut and that's just a little too much for me to pay for something that will be back to the way it was before in four months.

Price isn't everything. I thought it was too. I was spending the same amount for cuts as you and hating it every time. It became so bad that I threw my hands up and said, "I give up. I am just going to cut my hair anywhere." And I ended up going to Great Clips of all places because I just wanted short hair again. That's where I found the stylist who knew what she was doing. I spent so much money only to find a place that gives $15 dollar haircuts to be the best one.

Just go in places and ask, "Who does the best layering?" You will surprise how many stylist are willing to point to people other than themselves. (No stylist wants to be known for giving bad cuts.)

Try getting a professional keratin treatment. It's pricey but it'll straighten your hair and eliminate frizz for months, and make it more manageable afterwards. Try to find a good hair salon and ask them to recommend a shampoo for your hair too. It is pricey too, but I had a similar problem and after getting the treatment and the right shampoo it's a huge weigh off my back.

What's involved in this treatment? All my knowledge of professional straightening comes from Allure articles I read years ago when it was brand new and practically illegal because of the chemicals they've been using.

How long does it take? Does it hurt? What's the price range?

Re: I Have Hermione Hair

(Anonymous) 2012-08-10 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Takes about an hour and a half, maybe two. It doesn't hurt at all, it's just a chemical that they put on your hair and it relaxes it. At first it'll be really, really relaxed but as time goes by it takes more shape until it gets to a middle ground. It won't be less than $100, and I think the average is $200. it'll depend on where you live and the salon. Definitely compare salon prices.

I have not heard about it being illegal and I got mine at a salon I trust. Then again that was in Panama so the regulations may be different, but I had no side-effects and only had it done once because my hair's been fine since then.

It doesn't hurt. They just put stuff on your hair and leave it there and then wash it out and then you can't wash your hair for 48 hours or something like that.

I got one done at Aveda with their all-natural organic products, and to me, it had no effect at all and wasn't worth the money but YMMV.

Apart from the haircut, have you tried hair oil? I usually rub in it, leave in an hour or two before washing it. some women with really thick hair can just leave it in without washing. It really helps with mine - though I must admit I just gave up and flat iron it nowadays.

This: http://www.dabur.com/Products-Personal%20Care-Amla%20Hair%20Oil is my favourite, but I'm not sure if it's sold everywhere. Also this is specifically for dark hair - if you have lighter hair you might want to try Jasmine or coconut hair oil. hope that helps. as for haircuts - I just wear mine down.

If I want it straight, I flat iron it. If I want it wavy, a braid it in for the night and have waves in the morning.

Come to think of it my sister just gave me a sample of hair oil! Thanks for the tip!

Try getting it cut at a salon in a black neighborhood. My hair is quite similar, although I would call it wavy (it was curly before puberty), and when it was on the long side, I found I got some of the best results from salons that work with very thick hair on a daily basis. And don't be afraid to speak your mind to the stylist, and tell them to don't hold back with the thinning shears. I have had success wearing it very short, however. My features read as my age- I'm also 23- or older.

I am 26 and just got what I'm considering my first successful haircut, so you have my sincere sympathy.

When I got it cut I asked for it shoulder length, with lots of thinning but without layering at the bottom. I think he called it "definition at the ends" or something. lots of layers cannot be meant for bushy hair, it's just horrible, doesn't even straighten right, and I need the weight to keep it from frizzing up. I can't believe how many stylists have done that to me!

I have been combing "frizz-free" mousse in after washing (I use a moisturizing shampoo for dry/damaged hair and I swear to god it helps) and letting it air dry (after blow-drying my seriously demonic cowlick, which is a whole other story...)

Don't wash your hair more than a few times a week (really, this is what all of my hairdressers say and I have the same hair pretty much, maybe a bit more on the curly side than yours but still)

FIND A HAIRDRESSER THAT KNOWS HOW TO CUT CURLY HAIR. Check Yelp. This is important.

Don't use anything on your hair with sulfates in it. Use sulfate-free shampoos. Burt's Bees is good and pretty widely available

Oh yeah and CONDITION THE SHIT OUT OF THAT HAIR. Like, use a leave-in conditioner after you're done showering (on towel-dried hair). But again, avoid sulfates, that's the stuff that usually makes shampoo lather up real sudsy and that is apparently what you don't want if your hair is on the wavy/curly side

Also, a question for anyone in this thread -- how many of you have tried any Kinky-Curly products? I keep hearing good things about this brand but it's a bit expensive so I haven't tried it yet
