The most interesting cocktail you've ever invented/drank?

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-08-10 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Jumping off the thread above about our sobriety, I thought I'd ask about the most unusual/interesting cocktails you've ever had. Recipes, please!

I don't usually drink a lot of liquor or mixed drinks, but I really like a gin and tonic with some bitters splashed in. My husband introduced me to amaretto in sweet iced tea (orange pekoe), and while that sounds weird and gross, it is seriously yum.

I usually just drink standard stuff like whisky sour, gin and tonic or a seven-and-seven (or a margarita if it's done right), so I haven't had many weird coctails. I had one tonight that was like, cucumber-infused gin with basil and something else (I forget the last ingredient) and that was pretty good. I've also had a gin and tonic with jasmine tea liquor and I've wanted to try a version of that myself with jasmine-infused gin, I think it would turn out pretty well (maybe even with a splash of iced tea)

Oh, man. I bet that was Hendrick's gin. That's my favorite gin. It comes in this heavy, black apothecary glass and if I wasn't so clumsy, I'd put my shampoo and stuff in these jars because they are gorgeous.

I don't think I can even imagine what jasmine would taste like. LOL It sounds great though.

The worst "weird" coctail (cocktail?) I had was this abomination I had in a local cocktail lounge recently -- I forget what all was in it but I do know it contained seju and lychee (and had an actual lychee in it) and that was how I discovered that YOU CANNOT MIX SEJU WITH ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO ENJOY IT ALONE

My cousin's boyfriend is a bartender, and we were recently at a family wedding and he made me a drink of Malibu, vanilla vodka, pineapple juice and "a float" of Captain Morgan. He calls it White Girl Drunk, AND IT'S FUCKING AWESOME. I had, like, three.

OMG THAT SOUNDS YUMMO!

When I studied in Spain, we drank Malibu and pineapple juice all the live long night. Those other additions could only make it better!

I don't like drinking at BBQ's when my mom stays annoyingly sober so I've had to come up with recipes to tempt her.

Raspberry concentrate/mango juice/blueberry juice and corona beer,

Ginger steeped beer with peach-mint concentrate,

and a variation of
http://peaceloveguacamole.blogspot.com/2010/07/simply-glorious.html

are her three favorites but the fail proof way is to make my lemon iced tea and just dump vodka in. She always like that.

Your mama likes it sweet. And fruity. LOL

I think the ginger beer with peach mint sounds pretty durn good.

My parents are teetotalers basically but last time she was here, I gave my mom some Bailey's and it made her adorbs.

I actually can't think of any interesting cocktails I've had. I'm mostly a beer drinker--I live in New England where there's no shortage of quality microbreweries.

I do keep some Kraken rum around for the occasional rum & coke, and I like Creme de Menthe mixed with orange juice. But that's the extent of my mixed drink experience.

We can talk beer. I am so easy that way. LOL What do you prefer?

I do not like darker beers at all. My husband loves Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale, and we both love New Glarus's Stone Soup pale ale that when a friend of ours was going to Wisconsin, we gave him a hundred dollars and orders to bring back as much beer as he could with that.

Creme de menthe with orange juice sounds like the perfect brunch drink.

I prefer lighter beers. I like Smuttynose's Shoal Pale Ale and Harpoon IPA as all-year-round defaults, and I love seasonal summer ales and fall pumpkin ales. Right now I have a lot of Sea Dog raspberry-wheat ale, and they have a really good blueberry-wheat ale too. I like ciders, but I don't have one in particular that I prefer.

That said, I DO like Harpoon's Chocolate Stout. Chocolate Stouts are pretty much the only dark beer I'll try.

The Spouse and I were not even drunk when this happened, but we were talking about Things Not To Do and his soft drink habit, and accidentally invented the Waco Libre: 1 jigger dark rum, 1 scoop crushed ice, fill the rest of the glass with Dr. Pepper (use full-sugar Dr. Pepper if you have it; the HFCS doesn't get along with the rum, IMO), and add a squeeze of lime. It's not nearly as bad as it sounds, honestly.

Haha rum & Dr Pepper is my go-to emergency drink. But I am trashy and just pour a shot of rum into a can of diet Dr Pepper. Maybe next time I will class it up a little with a little lime.

I'm pretty sleep deprived right now, but I just have to mention that Waco Libre is hands down the best name I've ever heard for a cocktail. Maybe I'll call my version the Camden Libre. If that's not, like, presumptuous.

If I'm ever in the mood for something reaaaaally sweet I just mix a glass of blue curacao and sprite. It's not all that fancy or interesting, but it turns your tongue blue which makes it cool in my book.

I can't do the blue curacao. :( It's probably my least favorite liquor.

Sorry it's late, but I had to ask my friend for the recipe. (I was drunk when we made it!)

It's called Dirty Dave's Old El Paso (named after the guy who mixed it).

This is how you do it:
Bloody Mary salt rimmed tumbler
Cucumber vodka (1.5 oz)
Splash of sweet and sour
Squirt (the soda)
Garnish with spicy pickles

It's seriously delicious. I know it sounds weird, but it's really good. The pickles are from a specific local place and they are kind of sweet/spicy, but they aren't necessary it you can't find ones you like.

The most interesting cocktails I've invented were about last year or the year before, when I had an excess of cheap vodka and experimented with tea-infusing. (Put 2 oz. loose assam and 1 liter Absolut in a glass bottle, let sit for 24 hours, pour through a strainer into another glass bottle. Bam, tea vodka.) I think the last thing I made with it was basically a Manhattan with the tea vodka taking the place of the whisky—two parts tea vodka, one part sweet vermouth, dash o'bitters, optional cherry. But it was so fucking strong in flavor that I honestly could not see trying to drink it regularly without diluting it with seltzer. It's like straight-up tea extract, almost.

The most interesting cocktail I've ever drank would be the Dove Parlour's Green Fairy, which doesn't seem to be on their menu anymore.

What a great idea! Those tea-flavored vodkas are really popular right now. I never thought of trying to make my own. :)
