I usually just drink standard stuff like whisky sour, gin and tonic or a seven-and-seven (or a margarita if it's done right), so I haven't had many weird coctails. I had one tonight that was like, cucumber-infused gin with basil and something else (I forget the last ingredient) and that was pretty good. I've also had a gin and tonic with jasmine tea liquor and I've wanted to try a version of that myself with jasmine-infused gin, I think it would turn out pretty well (maybe even with a splash of iced tea)

Oh, man. I bet that was Hendrick's gin. That's my favorite gin. It comes in this heavy, black apothecary glass and if I wasn't so clumsy, I'd put my shampoo and stuff in these jars because they are gorgeous.

I don't think I can even imagine what jasmine would taste like. LOL It sounds great though.

The worst "weird" coctail (cocktail?) I had was this abomination I had in a local cocktail lounge recently -- I forget what all was in it but I do know it contained seju and lychee (and had an actual lychee in it) and that was how I discovered that YOU CANNOT MIX SEJU WITH ANYTHING YOU HAVE TO ENJOY IT ALONE

I do not know what seju is. What is it? LOL I love lychee, though.

Seju is a Korean liquor, the popular brand is Baek se ju (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baekseju) but it's my understanding that this is just a brand name (or perhaps refers to a specific type of seju?) and not the name of the actual liquor. It's made from rice sort of like sake but it's very sweet. I usually don't like sweet alcohol (well except for Hefeweizen which is pretty sweet) but I love this stuff, and it gets you DRUNK QUICK

Oooooooh. I've never had that. I do not like sake, and I generally don't like very sweet things either, so IDK if I would like it.

Have you had Umeshu, a sake made from this kind of plum? The one we've got is Choya, and we drank a different brand at a restaurant before we found this at our liquor store. My husband really digs it. I dig it less, but you might like it.

Do you know if seju also romanized as soju, or if they're similar but different rice wines (an admittedly super-cursory Google search didn't reveal anything either way)?

Baekseju is not soju.

Baekseju is the name of the actual liquor. Bek Se Ju is one of the brands.

BTW I have never had Hendrick's (but now I want to), and I am also looking for someone to advise me on which scotch or just whisky in general they recommend. I am embarrassed to admit that despite being descended (partially) from Scots and coming from a long line of avid scotch drinkers that I don't know much about scotch but I WANT TO LEARN

OMG, I know more about Scotch than I would care to because my husband fricking adores it. Truly, madly, deeply. I do not like Scotch. To me, Scotch tastes like bourbon gone wrong. LOL

Here are my suggestions, though. First off, if you're in a big city, google and see if there's a place nearby that is known for their scotches. We just went to savannah, and a pub there had scotch tasting flights. Josh was in heaven.

Second, decide whether you like the peaty or not. I hate, hate, hate the peaty. Some scotches are not that peaty.

I would definitely use a bit of ice or water, not much, when you drink scotch.

I know scotch be a sipping drink, but I have found that it is much more palatable to me with food, so that might make a difference for you.

If you're srsly interested, I could have him comment to you or PM you with some suggestions when he gets back; he's in Missouri right now for work.

bourbon

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-08-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Now, in terms of bourbon, I can help you. :)

If you want to make mixed drinks, Jack Daniels is just fine. I would not drink it on its own.

My favorite bourbon is Maker's Mark. It is super smooth. I like to drink it over ice with a nice lemon wedge squeezed in. My husband thinks the lemon is really fucking strange, but I love it. I also like Woodford Reserve but that vinter (or whatever LOL) can get reallllllly pricey. I would love to try some Pappy Van Winkle, but that shit is expensive and they only make a teensy teensy bit of it each year and so there's a huge perpetual demand. I just read an article in Garden and Gun about how one of the delivery guys got beat up cause they only allot like ten bottles per liquor store or something. LOL

Dickel and Knob Creek are also good. I wouldn't make mixed drinks with them.
