oh man, i know exactly where you're coming from, op. i used to read voraciously as a kid, discovered fanfiction, went through a period of reading both fanfiction and books, then read fanfiction exclusively for 3 years of college because it was so easy to find and required very little thinking, which was great while i procrastinated the fuck out of coursework.

it's only been recently, once 1. i got a kindle, and 2. i really started to get into revamping my writing style & actively attempting to differentiate extraordinary literature from good literature that i started picking up fictional books again. i love fanfiction but i can only think of one or two pieces that fall into the category of sincerely inspiring, whereas running through the bibliographies of renown/classic authors actually makes me cry with how good they are.

that and i'm woefully aware of how uncultured i am in regards to the humanities, having spent four years cooped up in a lab--so bring on the philosophy and sociology. :D

If they have as many defenders as Chris Brown does, then yes. I would bitch more about people like Mel Gibson and Sean Penn if more people were making posts about how their girlfriends were lying bitches seeking attention. But no one really likes Gibson or Penn anyway.

Character A/Character B is my OTP. I love reading and writing fanfiction about them. I love their relationship and interactions and their fuckupedness. They are just glorious.

But...I have a picture of Character A/Character C is my desktop background. I look at more fanart with them, and I have a whole folder on my computer dedicated to fanart of them. Most of my LJ icons include them, and I buy doujinshi about them.

They just look so much better together! They are just so aesthetically pleasing, and I find the fanart so much cuter. I love Character A/Character B with all my heart, but I don't enjoy looking at pictures of them as much.

Is anyone the same way? Are their pairings you prefer fanart-wise to your OTP? Are their pairings you hate or don't ship but like looking at fanart of?

I can't think of any specifically, but I like when the assholes are called on it and either leave or repent.

Eeeh... When straight women are using gay porn to create their own fantasies, and the gay men get kinda pissed about it... I don't think it's the gay men that are doing the appropriating.

Oh god no, not the Mass Effect fandom. D: I can't remember my foray into that fandom without thinking of the asshole guys who kept whingeing about how sick/sad/etc. it was that there were canon gay options for Shep and that girls dared to ship, play, and you know, exist in the fandom at all. So fucking nasty.

I've never gone into Fallout fandom because I know better, lawl. I know guys IRL who are into that fandom and as much as I love the games, I don't want to deal with the dudes who make it all about pissing contests and why aren't you macho enough and talking about how awful girls and girls in fandom are (not unlike this secret, ugh).

Sports anime/manga fandoms can be really awful, too. I see a lot of bullshit from male fans of Kuroko no Basket crying about how girls are "ruining their fandom" by, y'know, shipping and caring about the characters and not just the sport and so on. Uuuugh.
