late but YES. YES. THAT IS THE MAIN REASON WHY I HATE IT.

it literally says what makes her beautiful is that she doesn't know that she's beautiful. .......what

i have fake lyrics:
i'm trying to exploit your lack of self-esteem
so when i tell you i love you it's not what it seems
and every time that i say that you're beautiful
it really means, oh oh, i'm fucking other people

because let's be real

there's good stuff and bad stuff in both

Terry was never a Robin though. Like, it's sort of important to the character that he wasn't.

I would have liked it better if Bella was turned into a normal person and not an analyst. SMeyer's apparent point of Bella was to make her the every-girl, so I was disappointed that that fic didn't attempt to fix that most glaring issue.

Heh, sorry but it was all through personal IMs. I wish I had the patience to blog correctly. Volume 4 was fun! Michone! Prison! Drama! Intrigue! Though there's no shame in dropping something if it's boring. :D

I haven't read it, but it also seemed like cheap, shock value fodder to me. At least all the deaths in the show so far have been meaningful.

Late to the party but this is hilarious. And I imagined it all in black and white, ala Twilight Zone. I love that this is your first posted fic. Congrats! :D

I read a bit of the comics (I think it was the beginning of issue 2?) and it just seemed phenomenally hokey and stupid to me. The couple with the suicide pact was maudlin and silly. I'll take the show any day.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-12 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this. The shitty aspects of Tyrion are all there from the beginning, if you're paying attention (although, to be perfectly honest, I have my doubts about whether or not GRRM himself meant for the aspects to come across as shitty). He feels entitled to women, and he values beauty and youth in women above all else. It's clear when you read his inner dialogue about Shae that he never cared about her as a person, only that she was hot and young and reminded him of Tysha. But, until he murdered Shae, he was at least able to pretend he cared about how women felt.

Agreed! The end of the first novel could have been the end, and I'd have been satisfied.

That said, I do like the sequels... kinda? They have a lot of potential, I just wish they'd been better executed. Like... there probably should have been two instead of three.

So you like asphyxiation. You should try it while actually having sex.

Oh my God that like made me think of Fanboys and "that was the worst idea since Schumacher put nipples on Batman!" I promptly cracked up.

1. They weren't enemies yet.

2. Yeah, Jaime isn't always the brightest.

[personal profile] demishock 2012-08-12 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not enemies in the sense that they were openly hostile to each other (it's been a while since I read book 1), but Jaime's got the whole kingslayer stigma attached to him; Cersei's cheating on her husband, the king, who is one of Ned's best friends; and it's well-known that Ned Stark's whole thing is Honor, Honor, Honor. Ned's home isn't a safe place to be doing any of that (if there's even such a thing as a safe place for them).

Re: Embarrassing; dental hygiene

(Anonymous) 2012-08-13 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I am extremely phobic about the dentist, to the extent that I didn't go to the dentist for fifteen years and had a moderate case of gum disease by the time I was forced to go (broken wisdom tooth was the culprit.) When I'm feeling depressed, the first sign of it, seriously, is that I start skipping my dental routine. The best way for me to slog forward through it is to bring my toothbrush and paste and floss and a cup with me to the computer and then I brush while I'm watching an episode of a show I love, or autoscrolling through a longfic.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-13 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in a similar boat. I still read books very frequently - in the car, on breaks at work, on vacations, in bed, etc - basically any situation where I don't have access to a computer, and this is one of the main reasons I don't want a smartphone.

Also a factor, most of the books in my personal library are ones I've had for years, because I'm no longer in a situation where book-buying is economically feasible (With the exception of yard sale finds, bless them.) and the library's an hour's walk away. I can and do still read my YA favorites over and over again, but it's nice to be able to supplement that with new, genuinely good fiction available 24/7.

Mad props for the synchronised swimming picture! Spain should totally have won, they blew Russia out of the water.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-13 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
She had some power over what she said. I think it's pretty clear that she was aiming to hit him where it hurt with her words. She added far more venom and humiliation to that story then necessary and twisted up things that actually happened (like turning her pet name for him into a mockery of him) to make it sting even worse. I think it seemed very obvious that Shae manipulated him to her own ends and had no qualms about selling him out when she lost faith in him and his ability to provide for her. She may have even enjoyed after (in her mind) having to put up with having sex with a grotesque ugly man. Maybe the "giant of lannister" thing was a personal joke for her since the beginning. I don't think Shae was ever the "poor little whore" character you make her out to be. I think she was making the best out of her situation and I think Tyrion was an idiot for ever believing he was anything more than a useful tool/joke to her. He says as much to himself on a couple occasions, but still he tries to believe she might have some real loyalty and affection towards him.

I think its pretty much the only non-Nolan series where there was no robin.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-13 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see a lot of people have already agreed with your experience but I just had to say me too!

I have a huge backlog of books (the only thing that got me reading again was when I went to outback Australia on holidays and there was literally no internet or phone reception) and its not just with books but movies, I used to prefer movies but now I mostly watch tv shows.

In my case I think its mainly 2 things - 1. The multi-tasking element, I jump around to a lot of different things online. 2. The fact that I am happy to stop half way through with fic, whereas I feel compelled to read books in one go, no interruptions (same with movies).

Combine that with how busy every day life is, I just feel like I get more from my time with fic (plus that stops me staying up to 3am finishing a book on a work day :)
