I kinda have something like this; if I lose in a game (Touhou Project) I will close it and won't come back for a few days. Still though, if this gives you panic attacks, I think you should talk to someone about this. Maybe a friend?

*gives you a hug*

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

And I both have psychiatrist visits and take medication for my anxiety, but it doesn't always stop everything.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-13 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why I don't play games where if I lost I would have to start all the way over. I only play games that allow me to have like 20+ save files.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-13 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
... you have panic attacks from having to start over in a video game? REALLY?

Shit like this is what makes it difficult for people that have legitimate panic attacks over actual, serious issues.

Wow, Judgey McJudgerson.

How do you know OP's panic attacks aren't legit? And even if they aren't who's to say it isn't a problem to some degree? And maybe you could *suggest* some better terminology rather than attacking them outright without even asking what's up with that...

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2012-08-14 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's folk like you with arbitrary qualifiers that make it difficult for people to admit they have them in the first place, and thus they don't get help for their legit attacks because they're not suffering from "legit" problems.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure the idea of panic attacks is that they often happen for illogical reasons.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I am legally disabled because of severe anxiety issues, among other things.
I can't control what triggers my attacks. Sometimes, they come on due to legitimate issues, but a lot of the time it's just random things that normal people wouldn't care about it. My brain chemistry is messed up.

Just because I mention video games in a fandom-specific comm, doesn't mean I don't panic about a ton of other things. Don't assume.

You sound like the kind of person who'd put a spider on the shoulder of an arachnophobe because the spider is objectively harmless.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, playing video games could very well exacerbate panic attacks depending on the individual's underlying anxiety issues.

I get frustrated about it sometimes if I lose after sinking several hours into a fight (or hadn't saved for a long while before losing/accidentally killing one of my Sims) - the thought of having to sink so much time into it again and maybe fail again kinda sucks. Such is gaming.

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2012-08-14 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
No shame in that OP, I've gotten frustrated in games in that past and decided to leave them alone for a while, only to completely forget about it and come back to when I've completely forgotten where I was and have to start the game again to know what the hell I'm doing.

I'm taking a break from Shadow of the Colossus right now, because I couldn't get the damn horse to do what I want if my life depended on it, and in the game right now it does.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
...you too?
tasogare_n_hime: (Default)

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2012-08-14 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty much a one horse demolition derby in that game.

I've done this for Legend of Dragoon, though I didn't really forget where I was.
DAT LENUS FIGHT. ARGH!!!
But I actually ended up beating that boss and finishing the game, the next time I picked it up.

Yeah, I was playing Metroid Prime the other day, and dying right after the boss and realizing I'd have to play the whoooole tutorial agaiiinn lead me to rage quit. The way I see it, some games don't play fair, which is why I heart save states on my emulators. Zelda II drove me to tears when I played it on the NES proper.
badducks: (oregon trail)

[personal profile] badducks 2012-08-14 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't everyone do this? fo_O

I'm really bad about finishing games because if I make a mistake and have to do a bunch of crap over again I just end up shutting it off. It's not panic inducing, but it's so annoying and one of my biggest pet peeves is repeating myself. Having to play whole sections of games over again is pretty much the most annoying thing in the world for me heh. But I'll leave it alone for a few months until I forget about it and come back and play it no problem. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Let me get this straight.

You like playing really hard games but freak the fuck out over having to start over. Even though that's pretty much inevitable because of the kind of game you play.

Perhaps you should start investing your time in games that you'll actually have fun in rather than looking like you enjoy having panic attacks. If you hadn't said that in your secret, I might actually take the idea that you have them seriously. Right now, it just sounds like generic rage issues.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I liked these games and genre of games before I had major issues with anxiety.

I know it's probably not all that good for me, but neither are a lot of things that people do. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy them. It just means that starting over is a hindrance because I start panicking if I push through it without waiting a few days or sometimes months to calm down.
Which takes forever to beat something, if I ever do.
It doesn't mean I don't enjoy them when I'm doing well at them, which does happen.

da

why not try a gentler learning curve

or play in a way that allows save states?

He does some things very well, but other things, like female characters, he really doesn't.

On the upside, it's not like he's writing every episode or in complete control of every little thing. And it's not like there's One Creator for Doctor Who and we have to just let them wave their crazy laundry with out favorite characters because it's THEIR show after all ... someday we'll have a new person in control of the show.

I am the worst player of games, but my taste ranges from the easy to difficult because idgaf. You're not a bad gamer if you're still enjoying yourself. Just an unskilled one, don't kick yourself.

I haven't touched Portal in months despite being on the last part due to similar frustration (though no panic attacks). Every time I spend all that effort racing against the clock, maneuvering with the gods-be-damned keyboard, only to die anyway, fuck that. That's why I play hack-and-slash most of the time, where everything can be solved by dodging, jumping, and stabbing things real good.

You might want to consider getting a controller then? If you find using the keyboard difficult, that may be how you can best get it done.

I'm the opposite, keyboard and a mouse is how I play portal and games like it, but to each their own!
