The university I went to ran an English class on LOTR, but yeah, it sucks a lot that other SF/F books are some kind of huge taboo in literary circles. I've read plenty of vapid, shallow litfic that was supposedly good and lots of intelligent, meaningful SF that was supposedly 'just genre'. I was very fortunate to have a dissertation tutor (in a philosophy of science department) who had a bookcase full of SF in his office and who wrote serious philosophy papers about Neuromancer; he was a wonderful teacher, too.
