Hateboner. And a moron. If she has a problem with fantasy, she can take it up with my former professor, the head of the English Dept at the College of William and Mary (y'know... a pretty good school that's been around for a while) for the past thirty-odd years, who specialised in medieval lit, gave courses in Arthurian mythos and Celtic narrative, held a freshman seminar on fantasy lit each year (that people practically cut each other to get into), and let me write a paper titled "'The Halls of My Fathers': Shame and Guilt Cultures in The Lord of the Rings, or: Why Theoden Is A Badass". (Okay, that wasn't really the printed subtitle of the paper, but it was how I introduced it in class, and he about laughed his ass off and agreed it was an accurate assessment).

Genre fiction is a reflection of our own values and problems as a society. It isn't flawless, but neither is "literary" fiction (and someday someone's going to explain to me wtf that term means). And didn't someone do some neurological study lately that showed worldbuilding and mythos-creation (like you have to do in fantasy) use a lot more of your brain a lot more creatively? People who dismiss genre fiction just for being genre fictions are snobs, and they can take their prejudice to the curb.
