I had more or less this same experience. I've had some teachers who were exceptions, and one creative writing teacher who condescendingly told people they could write genre fiction, but they had to focus on "elevating" it.

Of course, scads of literary fiction has elements that in my mind make it speculative fiction. But no, no, The Handmaid's Tale isn't sci-fi!
