Genre fiction is "crap."

Except when it rises above it.

It's all the same, and I don't just mean in fantasy. Look at, say, bestseller thrillers like Clancy books. They're trite, predictable "food for the masses" or whatever. But there are excellent thrillers out there. It's just that the mass-produced best-seller stuff usually isn't that. (It is often fun, though, and that doesn't hurt anyone. Usually. *cough50shadescough*)

The problem with fantasy/sci-fi fiction that apparently justifies your teacher's hateboner (in her mind) is that the "genre" often overrides the actual craftsmanship in the book. Slap some rockets and robots on and call it sci-fi, boom, now it will sell. But that's not what makes science fiction what it is (you can read Harlan Ellison's rant about how Star Wars is not science fiction, and honestly, he's right). Dragons and magic spells don't make something fantasy. The best writers, people like Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, and yes, even though I'm not a fan, Pullman know that. They use those elements as trappings, but tell a very human story, one that isn't so much about the magic and fairies as it is about people and a personal worldview. And that's what good fiction is supposed to be about.

Your teacher was a jerk for not letting you do your first choice. Like I said, HDM, not a fan, but wow, that's gotta be an excellent series to do an in-depth look at.
