I honestly don't understand the prejudice against genre fiction. As far as I'm concerned, science fiction can be some of the most important fiction to mankind. It's all about what we can be or could be, for better or for worse, or exploring what we are by comparing us to something completely alien, and exploring how to interact and co-operate and accept people who aren't like you and just... so many amazing themes! Like, sure some of it is just shlocky space opera-y fun that doesn't say anything except 'yay! space adventures!' But heck, even something like Star Trek, which was pretty soft sci-fi inspired a lot of people!

So... yeah. I think speculative fiction is important, and I really wish it was treated with more respect.

As for other genres, and fantasy... what exactly is so wrong about creating fantastic new worlds and stories to enjoy? It may not be trying to explain our world anymore, but it's pretty much modern-day mythology! There's nothing wrong with making up fantastic stories and enjoying them. In fact, I'd say it's an integral part of being human. If you can't enjoy at least some brand of made-up story, I feel like your life is poorer for it.

Lol they all agree, but they call it "speculative fiction". What they mean is, of course, "high quality sci-fi".
