Actually if I recall the ratings have gone DOWN in the UK since his run began? As for production values, honestly the series has gotten a subsequently larger budget with each season (even in RTD's run, compare season four to season one), but who cares? Yeah it looks glossier, but I could not care less when the content is no good at all.

I think it's totally fair to say he's the worst thing that's happened to the show, because he did the worst thing he could to it- made it not good imo. I don't care how popular the show is if the show isn't good.

It keeps getting acclaim*, Smith's won a BAFTA, and more people internationally are watching and buying it off itunes. And how many people watch it on iplayer (I would watch the episodes here in Canada on Space's player)? Tv ratings, neilson ratings, whatever, don't factor that in.

eta: *for the record, I have no clue why, other than settling for people liking things I don't like.

That's because people are all over Moffat's dick and have been for years. Every single year of RTD's run except one, he won the Hugo award for best short form drama. The only time he didn't win, he still placed highest of all the nominated Doctor Who episodes (above Midnight and Turn Left to which I say WHAT). It was and is ridiculous the way he gets acclaim lavished upon him by some groups of people imo. It's unsurprising considering that most of them are run by middle-aged white guys, which is exactly what Moffat champions.

I don't think the discrepancy in ratings can be explained by iplayer viewers. There is a reason why RTD's Doctors (or at least Ten) and companions continue to beat Moffat's in every popularity poll.

So you're saying that a show, that has continues to have high ratings since being rebooted seven years ago, is being ruined because the current showrunner is not completely beloved by the fandom and geek community (which is what a Hugo Award amounts to tbh. awesome, but niche)? Hey, as long as the show keeps making money, I can hope that the next showrunner can only do better and take advantage of the installed fanbase/audience.

And please. You're being completely disingenuous if you're telling me that only a target audience could possibly love and positively review his stories.

Yes I think that he is the worst thing to happen to the show because the show is no longer good. It's not relevant to me how many people are watching it. For me personally if the show is no longer good, it's a bad thing (or at least it is temporarily, until a better showrunner comes along). I don't see how that's odd?

No that's not what I mean, but I do think that the... critical acclaim he receives is certainly more male slanted.

Odd because I thought you were touting your own enjoyment as the only one that matters on a broad level, because I am talking about the series' overall success. My bad. It's the opposite of being run into the ground, and that's why I don't think he's the worst. my totally holy yet subjective opinion.

right right popular things are popular. If you don't care about who's watching the show now, why did you bother bringing up the ratings in the first place.

I have no idea how you'd get that from me expressing my opinion that it is worst run of the series.

I brought up the ratings because you seemed to imply that the show was more popular than ever, which I disagreed with.

Yeah, because the story is shit. Oh wait. I already said that in my first comment.

Which you're basically wrong about anyways. That's not an opinion so much as it's wishful thinking.

I don't know that you can give credit to Moffat for the expansion of the international fanbase though, because that was already happening with RTD's run.

The difference with Moffat's run is they finally started realizing that there was an international fanbase that was getting larger and more rabid, and so they started getting the show to us more quickly in a legal manner, where as before international fans all had to pirate if they wanted to see it in any sort of timely manner.

It really has nothing to do with Moffat, BBC is just trying to get more money out of the show regardless of who is running it.

Yup. It's all due to marketing alone indeed lol
