Well, the fantasy genre has a bad rep because yeah, tons of it is utter crap. I mean, look through the fantasy section and you'll see mostly variations on the themes of (1) cats/dragons, (2) fairies/elves, or (3) swords, sometimes including elves and cats/dragons. And all of it cliche.

But then there are a few here and there that stand out. I haven't read His Dark Materials, so I can't comment on that. People could always start out by pointing out to their teachers that yes, fantasy has that rep, but here's why (x series I want to discuss) is totes different!

Pray do tell, what is it that makes dragons, cats, swords, elves, or fairies necessarily "utter crap"? It's one thing to say that a fantasy series is crap if it's a completely derivative Tolkein ripoff that does nothing new or interesting with any of the iconic elements, but you seem to be saying here that the mere presence of dragons implies that a series is crap. This is ridiculous.
