I hope this doesn't come off as harsh but it's possible they didn't think as much of the friendship as you did. When you're young you don't always think having older friends is a big deal, but older friends often don't take their younger friends very seriously, especially if the age gap is that large.

It's not that you weren't appreciated as a person, it's just that sometimes life experience does make a difference and it's nice to have people closer to your own age to talk to. Even in silly things like fandom it can still be nice to have people your own age.

Don't take this as me saying people shouldn't have friends of all ages, because I have friends both a lot younger and a lot older then me, I'm just trying to explain why maybe there is a distance between you and your old friends.

sadly, this

it's no fault of you, op, but unless you find that you have very similar life philosophies, super-compatible personalities and/or a multitude of shared interests beyond the fandom, it's hard to keep friendships even in friends of similar ages; when there is a big age gap the different stages you're going through throw in even more difficulties (school vs work; family you're born into vs a family you might make for yourself; you start having less free time, etc.)

Eh, I had younger friends myself, and it's not that I appreciate them. But we do ended up drifting appart (they went to college, I got a job, etc). Drifting appart happens, with or without the age gap.

eta: Not saying that you can't be friends with people older than you. I have very good friends who are way younger than me, and we don't even share fandoms!

It's possible they took a more maternal/paternal interest in you than a "Yay, let's be bffs!" kind of interest. Combine that with enthusiasm for a shared fandom and it may have felt like there was a much stronger friendship connection than there really was. I interpret a lot of my early fandom friendships this way after the fact. I was in my late teens/early twenties and a lot of my fandom friends were in their thirties and forties.

Do you try to engage them on tumbler and Twitter and they ignore you or do you just friend/follow/whatever them and wait for them to contact you? If the former, then bummer and I suppose it's time to move on. If the latter, maybe you should drop them a line. (Do you share any of their new fandoms? That point of connection could help rekindle some old friendships and maybe now with the passage of time the age difference may not mean so much.)

OP here. Yeah. Tried to engage them via Tumblr, Twitter, etc. and they never replied. We have no new fandoms in common so that avenue is closed. I wasted all those years thinking it was a genuine friendships when it was nothing to them? I wish I knew that from the start.
