Crafting MMOs?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-14 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Anybody know of any MMOs (that aren't Minecraft) with a focus on cooperative crafting/craftskills? Ideally something where you can grab a bunch of friends, specialize in different areas, and build a town or something like that.

Everything I've found so far is either A) cool crafting system then everybody has their own patch of land to work on and it's not cooperative at all (e.g. Glitch), or B) there's cooperation in pooling resources for a guild castle or something but everything else is combat-focused (e.g. ... most standard MMOs).

Anything?

I was just coming here to post pretty much EXACTLY the same thing. I've been looking all day for non-combat MMOs and so far haven't had any luck.

So yeah, definitely seconding this.

Second Life?

Does that actually have a crafting system? I thought that was more designing skins and buildings and doing "OOC crafting." As in the player designs stuff using out-of-game tools and then puts it into the game versus crafting things in-game.

Yeah SL doesn't have a gathering/farming/production system just straight items and architecture from scratch. No character craft skills it's all the player

Unless it's changed a lot in the last couple years, there's a lot of crafting to be done directly in the game. I barely remember any specifics, but I went to a number of classes that taught how to use the in-game crafting stuff.

Iirc, making stuff is more or less free, there was just a limit on what you could keep permanently without owning some sort of storage space.

Hmmm, I don't know if that's exactly what I'm looking for, then. Your character doesn't have skills or anything, right? It's just whatever you as the player can do, and you as the player have to take classes to learn the creator-tools?

I meant something more like Glitch (or even WoW) where you have to go find items then combine them to create other things and so on. Second Life sounds like it's more to do with player creativity (reskin your hair, design your clothes) than in-game craft skills (use your character's alchemy skill to do herbs + flask = potion).

Oh! Yeah, it's something any player can do (via any of their avatars.)

Try www.puzzlepirates.com. Everything in the game is handled with puzzles (think Bejeweled; basic, repetitive mechanics), and it's fairly cooperative-group oriented - there's some solo content, but being in a group is better all the way around.

It's been years since I played, but it's free to play, with the option to either purchase a subscription or make micropayments to open additional content. (If you get good at the puzzles, you can easily play completely free on the two micropay servers; there's an in-game market from game currency to micropayment currency.) I remember the community as being pretty amazing, though that might have changed.

Still, it's hard to beat free, especially if you like pirates and/or puzzles.

Was coming here to suggest Puzzle Pirates.
They merged some of the oceans (servers,) though, so there is only one big subscriber ocean and one big dubloon micropayment ocean.

It's not out yet, but Fortnite looks pretty cool.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/07/12/fortnite-is-the-first-unreal-engine-4-game.aspx

"This zombie-like foe that tries to overwhelm players' structures with their numbers. Unfortunately, the Fortnite's enemies also work in conjunction with each other. Smashers are big brutes who smash through players' walls, and trolls are sneaky little buggers who can phaze through walls and will sneak through a fort, opening door for husks, and stealing players stuff.

In order to keep back these creative foes, players will have to master their building skills, collect better materials from the world, and keep upgrading their fortress. Players have a lot of options to tweak their structure, adding doors, arches, and sniper perches to their building."

Haven't played it in a long time, and it was pretty rough when I did, but give Wurm Online a whirl? Sounds up your alley.

King Arthur's Gold is perfect! It's like Terraria, 2D, with crafting fortresses and combat against other teams I believe. I haven't played it myself but I heard it's pretty good.

Terraria? I haven't played it much, but my bf is nuts about it currently. It's similar to Minecraft though.

Terraria (http://www.terraria.org/)
Runescape (http://www.runescape.com/)
Haven and Hearth (http://www.havenandhearth.com)
Salem (http://www.paradoxplaza.com/games/salem) *in beta*
A Tale in the Desert (http://www.atitd.com/)
Linkrealms (http://www.linkrealms.com/) *beta*
Guild 2 (http://www.theguild2.com/) *play over lan/private server*
Anno 1404 (http://anno1404.wikia.com/wiki/Anno_1404_Wiki) *lan/private server*

I know some are stretching it, but it's really a niche genre that hasn't quite exploded into a lot of games, especially with Minecraft ruling over it. Your best bet really is MC for the type of co-op building/crafting you're looking for. Have you looked at some mods? I got bored with it, but after playing on Tekkit (http://www.technicpack.net/tekkit/) servers it really breathed new life into the game for me.
