How do you come up with usernames?

I'm so, so horrible at coming up with a username anytime I have to sign up for a new site. I always end up doing either something boring with some variation of my name/initials/birthday or other meaningful numbers, or something totally cheesy and girly, and I don't even know where those come from because that's not really my personality at all. For some reason I just completely suck at coming up with anything that's not totally stupid.

What about everyone else?

I got this one - by luck. I was nicknamed the Emperor when I lived in an apartment named the Death Star in college.


My tumblr name is stolen from my person hero, and who at one point was the focus of my graduate thesis.

Otherwise, I steal cute names (like thehistorian) and put my birthday after it.

I usually just use things that I like and try to find a relevant word or something. Or a reference to something I like. One of the first usernames I had on the internet was hp_simlover (because I loved harry potter and the sims!!! soo original wow) and from then I started using a shortened form of that, but now it's become more of a varied mess. Sometimes I'll use my tumblr url, though it's changed now (which was a monty python reference), and other times I use a username based on a line from a Flight Of The Conchords song.

Um, I don't know if that's helpful. But books/tv/movies/quotes you like are probably good starting points...

Mine is a carryover from my LJ.

That name came from a painting I saw once on a cruise. No matter how much a search, though, I have yet to ever find the painting again. The painting was of a Jester who had been given the freedom to choose which mask they wanted to wear and so held one in each hand.

I was in middle school at the time and my imagination always tended to get away from me. I made up a story about it. I always felt bad for jesters because the moment they were no longer funny, they are forgotten and thrown out like garbage. The jester in the painting wasn't funny; they were expressing the ability to choose. A somewhat serious topic.

Soon after I made my LJ account and thought of this.

My names are normally associated with stories I make up.

If you're looking for a good username I know one of my friends just goes to a bunch of name generators and settles on a name she likes.

Usually I have a go to list of usernames to pick, this one included.
I've also started combining some, like my old LJ UN with my tumblr url.

I was playing a character in an RPBEM and I was supposed to resurrect a character but not let anyone know who was posting... so EnigmaSphinx. My regular user name is my real nick, everyone who knows me knows it; ES is my regular pseudonym. I stick with what I like.

I have a rotating set of about six, one of which is guaranteed never to be used. It takes me a long, long time to come up with RP usernames, but usually once I've decided it feels perfect.

I usually have a list of names I use and if those are taken, I do some variation of it. For example, I've been using "littlebat" for years (taken from a Batgirl issue) but that was already stolen, so I added "kitkat" because kit kats are delicious.

Wow... looking up littlebat, I realize that's me and I don't remember making the account.

I just blew my own mind with my stupidity.

I've done the 'character name with numbers' thing, twists on a favorite characters name, a nickname or a fandom quote, but this one is my characters name in an online game; it was just easier using it than thinking of something new. Good names are hard, yo.

Usually from song I can relate to, since I'm a big music nerd. My current username is from a Cocteau Twins' song, and until a few months ago, I used one based on an Ayumi Hamasaki song title.

I used to study a subject with lots of long, pretty words so for a while all of my passwords and usernames had something to do with that subject, but I'm forgetting all I learned, so no more of that. My two newest usernames are based on delicious sounding foods from my favourite books - as soon as I wrote that I remembered one of my all time favourite dishes, which I immediately searched for on Livejournal... And it turns out I have a secret sock account that I'd totally forgotten I'd made! Hurrah! Thanks for reminding me :) I also have a couple of quotes I like that I can bastardise a few different ways if my other usernames are taken - lines from books or poems. And every so often I come up with a very cool character name that I just have to keep for myself.

Then one day, a coworker misspelled jalapeno on a kitchen message. I never laughed so hard, and wanted it!

I usually use the same name everywhere, so I'm Tabaqui or Tabaquij or TabaquiJackal in a lot of places.

Where i decide to do something else, like on FB where i didn't want my LJ/fandom name *or* my real name, i went with a rather obscure but beloved name of a book character.

I can come up with a good name, but I fear it will be obsolete soon. Raichu is the nickname I use on the Internet, and it's also my username in a lot of places (i.e. raichu100) but I wanted something new for DW. "Diet poison" is a phrase from a song by one of my favorite bands (Barenaked Ladies) and it's not my favorite song or anything, but I just love the line. (All their lyrics are so clever :3) It's also my Pesterchum handle. On one place I signed up as vriska_serket - idr why, but I like the name because she's my favorite character in Homestuck - ok, one of my favorite characters in anything ever (icon relevant) and I love the name too.

I think I'm starting to not like the name "Raichu" as much. When I first started using it, I thought of Raichu (my favorite Pokémon) as a 'mon that was strong, powerful, intense, etc. because of the sheer electrical power it has. I'm starting to realize that more people see it as a "cutsie" Pokémon rather than a "tough" one, so that's how a lot of people perceive me, and it's pretty much not what I was trying to get across with it. I've gotten made fun of for it quite a bit lately (and I'm uber sick of people calling me "Pikachu" and "Pichu" because hurr hurr that's SO FUNNY).

Eh, I usually keep the same pseud/username for a long time. This one's fairly new, but I worked in a laboratory and I got to label biohazardous waste and I was like FREE STICKERS? So I'm biohazardgirl because. . .I like stickers, basically.

I haven't ever made a fandom based username because. . .I don't really know why! Maybe just choose a hobby or something from your real life and configure it into a pseud?

I came up with this after I hated my old username, missvmarigold. It was inspired by a Gossip Girl character's name. When I decided to flee that fandom, I changed my name to a pun of the old username--I thought having a miss in the name hindered me somewhat.

Also, I feel this username reflects my fic--typically dark, with some humor sprinkled in.

I pick something non-mainstream that I love and pick something from it at random, in this case the song The Littlest Birds. I have another one that's my RL name minus vowels that I use for everything else.

This is relevant because last week I panicked, became convinced that my embarrassing obsession with Dylan O'Brien could be linked to my RL identity, and created new accounts for everything under this username. It was fun!

i tend to go for "descriptor + creature". most of the time it doesnt make sense (this handle being one of many), but i end up liking and recycling a bunch.

Well I got mine from when I misread a cafe called Street Cafe as Street Cake. I thought that was a weird name and it kinda stuck to me, so I started using it as my user name cuz it's cute and better than using my own name.

Maybe you have a particular name or words that sorta stuck to you because they were weird or quirky? Or you could take something you enjoy or associate yourself with and look it up, see if any of its terminology catches your eye.

My tumblr is almostlucy, which is another song by the same artist. My name is neither Gina nor Lucy though. I just love Al Stewart.

I'm pimpmytardis on lj which I kind of regret although people always tell me they like it. I just wish I hadn't picked a fandom-related username. My previous username on lj was below_the_salt, which is a medieval reference and an awesome Steeleye Span album. I guess my answer is- I like music references more than fandom ones? I haven't outgrown being represented by my music love but I kind of have for Doctor Who fandom. I still like the show, I just don't want to be associated with it every comment.

i thought up this one in 2005 (i was 13 lol) and i just keep using it because i'm so attached to it. it's the nicknames of two characters i like from the sisterhood of the traveling pants books.
