Many years ago, I went to Japan on an exchange trip, and my host family bought a dessert.

It was shaped like a muffin, and was made of this brown paste stuff that was layered so it looked a bit like knitting or weaving. I think there was icing dusted on the top. The brown paste tasted of caramel. Inside, it was filled with cream.

It was the most delicious thing I've ever had.

My host family called it a "mon brown" or something like that, so I think it might be French? Google results bring up nothing.

hmmm unfortunately it wasn't pastry.
(i'm not even certain if it was baked... the dessert wasn't heated up. the outside was soft, almost like cream but thicker in consistency.)

Yay! It's one of my favorite desserts, too -- a little uncommon but not totally unfindable in the US. :D
