So I had to euthanize my pet rat last night, and I feel really stupid that I'm so upset over it. Like people are judging me for mourning something that wasn't going to live very long anyway. I guess I'm just glad I don't have to go out in public today like I did the last time I had to put down one of my rats. Fuck.

I'm so sorry.

I lost my dog a couple of months ago, and it still hurts. I still think about her every single day. I'm still crying over her. Normally I'm detached and not very emotional, but she was my best friend, and I'm not going to be ashamed of mourning her.

I'm not going to tell you that I know what it's like, because I absolutely hated it when people said that to me. My pet is not your pet, and so I can't know the pain of losing your pet. But I will tell you that there's nothing wrong with mourning your rat, and screw anyone who says otherwise. Someone who doesn't understand why we mourn pets is a small human, capable of nothing but small thoughts and small feelings. You don't want to be like them. Mourning comes from a lifetime of love, and love should never be judged foolish or silly. Just remember that you made the world a little bit of a better place by giving an animal a safe, happy life. Hold on to that. I hope it provides you some comfort.
