Anon from above. I'm sorry I sounded frustrated/snippy... I'm white & cis too but disabled, lesbian and poor, and I guess I got over thinking that that negated white & cis a while back, especially as I now live in a town with a high population of dispossessed, hounded non-whites vs housed whites, and it's hard to see wider society's ideas on this. I think it's awesome you're looking at this stuff too, and it's not easy (well it wasn't for me anyway).

I can, to an extent, kind of empathise with the OP here -- my now-ex best friend repeatedly (as in, on a near- daily basis) blew off spending time with both myself and her now-ex husband to RP sex scenes with some new friend, and, for a very long time, lied about the reasons for bailing too; it's why I can't stand Supernatural, so I can definitely relate to that aspect of this secret.

But it does depend on the context. Had she been honest about it, or if it had been, say, once a week instead of five or six times, NBD. Or at least, less of one. But as often as it was, and lying about it to boot... yeah, I can most definitely understand how that kind of thing can taint something.

I disagree there.

I think that if you're interacting with actual people in a sexual way, even if it's just as a character, it's different than porn.
That doesn't mean it shouldn't be acceptable in a relationship, but I think it's definitely that should be discussed before just doing it.

This. There's a world of difference between MMOs and FPS online play compared to, say, a JRPG or Koei button-masher or Nintendo platformer. And if OP still wants to play a shoot-em-up but doesn't want to hear douchebags on the internet use sexist slurs and rape terms, then don't go online. A lot simpler than "weh, I'm too hurt to support gaming anymore weh."

I'll bet you can come up with all sorts of reasons why those things have value, however. But you decided some time ago that you hate gaming and all its permutations, and so you've adopted a heuristic that prevents you from acknowledging any other point of view -- not unlike the Cro-Magnons among gamers who defend what shouldn't be defended.

Ah the appeal to sympathy. I generally call them out on it, and reiterate my points using canon.

I find pointing out that their experiences are not the character's experiences helpful. While their experiences might give them a different perspective, it does not make them the be all and end all authority on abused characters.

I'm a cartooning major, and I've done a few fannish comics as assignments, though none of my major ones. I even did a big bang assignment for class work! My favorite is a one page Sherlock/John comic I did where they had a dog named Moriarty (http://cherrycolouredart.tumblr.com/post/29653307517/i-actually-drew-this-a-couple-years-ago-and-have).
